The 2012 season at Dover Raceway moves up a gear this
Sunday (May 20) afternoon with a crucial four formula event with plenty to play for in each division.
For the National Bangers the afternoon has perhaps double importance as the meeting as it is the penultimate
British and Masters Championship qualifying round meaning it truly is crunch time for those drivers who want to be a part of the biggest races of the season.
Similarly the second Masters Championship qualifiers for the Bangerstox
and Super Rods are also going to be important for all drivers as the points determine the starting grids for the biggest race of their season at Dover Raceway.
Completing the bill are the 11 to 16 year old stars of the future in the Ministox who make their first appearance at the raceway this season and race in their first Kent Championship qualifying round
of 2012.
A hugely consistent afternoon at the season opener on Easter Monday means Lee Saunders (349) currently heads the
National Banger track championship and having reclaimed the Masters Championship he will now be aiming for his maiden track championship title to go along with it in 2012.
His nearest rival at the moment is perhaps set to be his biggest rival this season with reigning Kent Champion Dave Palmer (53) who won the track title in 2009 and 2010 but lost his grip on the crown last season and will be eager to reclaim the title this season.
In 2011 it was John Reeves (188) who finally, after numerous years of trying, captured the track championship but his 2012 campaign did not begin in the best of fashion and so he will be looking to make up for lost time this weekend.
Currently completing the top 10 are Easter Monday Destruction Derby winner Scott Saunders (346), World Champion Shane Davies (158), double race winner on April 9 Steve Sedgwick (113), Sean Crittenden (442), former British Champion Stu Cumming (57) and son Jordan (570) and Ricky Hughes (32) who will all aim to move up the ladder this weekend.
The limited contact Bangerstox class continues to be the best supported formula at Dover Raceway in 2012 in terms of driver numbers and the points championship is shaping up to be hugely close as heading into this weekend, the top two are tied in points as are the next two drivers in the standings with a mere seven points between the four.
Owen Childs (58) and Richard Randall (52) share the top spot with Chris Bull (65) and Dick Tracey (222) close behind and somewhat remarkably only Childs has enjoyed a race win this season at Dover, the other three all looking for their first wins of 2012 at the Kent venue this weekend.
Clicking at their heels are Jay Powell (15), Gareth Poile (77), heat and final winner earlier this month Andy Burbridge (20), Mark Sweeney (99) and newcomer Nathan Hogbin (84) who will all be eager to move up the standings.
Poile will also be looking to continue his form as the only driver to have won a race at both meetings at Dover so far in 2012, can he make it three from three this weekend?
Another to watch for is Kevin May (54) who marked his first outing in the formula earlier this month with a fine race win to quickly establish himself as a contender this season.
While the non contact Super Rods may have not produced the biggest of grids in recent times there is no denying the competitive of the formula and with Wayne Powell (30) impressing a few weeks ago with a heat and final double it could now be argued that the entire field is a contender in the season long points race.
So far the season has seen three race winners, Michael Godfrey (27), Nigel Goodwin (121) and Powell, each with two wins a apiece but reigning points champion Pete Emson (41), Anthony Emson (6) and reigning Masters Championship Steve Donavan (29) are snapping at their heels with just 20 points between the top six making it increasingly likely that every race and every season is likely to be crucial.
Completing the bill are the young guns in the Ministox in their first outing of the season at Dover Raceway and the first Kent Championship qualifying round as the drivers battle it out for grid positions in the big race of the season at the track later this summer.
Shane Harvey (383) and Charley Streeton (320) were front runners at Dover in 2011 while another Kent based racer Mitchel Saunders (348) will aim to build on his form of the tail end of last season.
Ross Fisher (344) however has been in top form in Suffolk and leads the Mildenhall Stadium track championship and will be looking to bring that success to Kent this year as will Michael Maskall Jnr (327) who is also enjoying some great results in the twilight of his Ministox career.
Banger and stockcar racing offers excitement, action and fun for all the family at a great value for money price and this event is no different. Admission is just £9 for adults and concessions (under 14s and OAPs) is just £4 and you can take advantage of the family tickets which admits any two adults and any four concessions for just £22 so there is no excuse to not bring the children or the grand parents along as well. And at Dover Raceway there are no hidden costs in the admission prices with the race programme and track side car parking all included as well.
The first race starts at 1pm.
