A fine field of 70 National Bangers showed for a domestic bash on September 27 including several visitors from PRI, TSR, Incarace, Spedeworth and most noticeably Smallfield's World Dirt Champ 91 Dave Barwick. Car wise 17 Mark Anderson wielded a smart Stellar while 130 Jason Harrison returned a Mazda 929 estate with the top cars a pair of Granada coupes for 99 Ritchie Ahern and 564 Mark Cooper.

17 Caveman always has a smart looking car and his Stellar was no different (Catley)

31 for the first heat with 174 Steve Ashman (Bluebird) going in hard unaided before 753 Billy Cunningham buried 115 Gary Rose and 212 Paul Mead (Mk3) clobbered the inner wall while the luckless 115 Rosy took a hit from 603 Jon Cooper as a spun 109 Anders Blowers was hit by 53 Dave Palmer and Harrison took a T-bone from 214 Marcus Ballard.2 Martin Brinkworth (Bluebird) took a hit from Ashman who was pounded by 324 Mark Latham (Mk3) as a result before 753 Billy Cunningham put 621 James Tibbles (Cortina) into the wall while 70 Charlie Cunningham suffered a similar fate at the hands of Blowers and 552 Karl Douglas (Sapphire) put in Latham. 273 Kevin McClagish then buried the leading 175 Karl Corsby (Bluebird estate) and Harrison while Cooper landed a T-bone to 710 Andrew Donnovan (Audi C) on the back straight. Corsby's luck didn't get better as he was buried by 131 Barry Wade (Volvo) but he got a taste of his own medicine from 99 the Cheat as 753 Young Gun gave Corsby one on the nose. 273 Mad Mouse won by a mile from the Cheat and 85 James Ellis.

175 Karl Corsby took a big T-bone from 753 Young Gun in the opener (Catley)

A monster 38 car field for a destructive heat two with 875 Dave White (Cavalier) involved early with hits on 775 Anthony Church and 619 Karl Turnbull (Mk3) before 92 Roy Harper (Mk3) was buried by 91 Bart as a top bend pile-up started to form while brothers 465 Andy and 665 Stu Scarlett met on the nose and 446 Lee Greer put away 215 Michael Croxon. Bart continued his show with a hard pit bend follow-in on 801 Craig Powell (Astra) as 364 Sean Winchester hammered 169 Len Brinkley in the huge road bend blockage and continued to rearrange 40 Lester Freestone (Mazda 405) on the back straight before 119 Davey Cox gave 775 Churchy a big top bend hit but the TSR man rebounded to hammer 192 Terry Nightingale (Volvo estate) as 835 Michael Finchman (Capri) was stuffed by 396 Graham Hyla and 520 Derek Caton (Volvo estate), on a rare outing, turned round to stop 169 Lenny Boy but paid for it witha hefty shot from the rated Bart. Cruncher was again a thorn in the side on Churchy as he followed him, the TSR man then taking a stiff T-bone from Bart who sparked up on impact to bring the reds out a little early. 118 Rob Bishop (Volvo estate) collected the win from Hyla and 703 John Seex (Mk3).

40 Lester Freestone was destroyed by 364 Sean Winchester in heat two (Catley)

The consolation was next and raised just 22 cars with 602 Shaun Cooper (Sierra estate) failing to get running and he took one from 877 Jason Shreeve (Escort) before Tibbles was put in by Ashman and 347 Ginger (Capri) assaulted Churchy and 766 Barry Lee did the same to Ashman as 721 Mark Quinsey (Saab 900) launched Latham into the inner wall. Ginger leaned in 619 Rhino and continued to bury 162 Mark Ashford (Mk3) and T-bone 169 Lenny Boy. 215 Michael Croxon won from 131 Little Barry and 766 Barry the Bull.

27 qualifiers gridded for the final with Finchman taking a bone from Little Barry early before Brinkworth struck White head-on as Little Barry continued to bury Croxon while White continued to put in Barry the Bull but Bad Co revenge was swift thanks to 966 Mark Hackett as 119 Cruncher gave Finchman a head-on and Seex met Barry the Bull similarly before 364 Sean Winchester blew up 17 Caveman at the end of the home straight. 109 Anders Blowers stuffed Colbert as 396 Graham Hyla spun 749 Paul Bearne to grab the lead with Cruncher then squeezing Blowers into 749 Beany a lap later while Lenny Boy turned round to assault Colbert as Rhino hit Seex who had gone second. On the last bend Colbert turned round for Lenny Boy which slowed Hyla and allowed 53 Dave Palmer to dive through and win from a recovered Hyla and Rhino with Colbert pounding Lenny Boy. Just seven finished.

17 Caveman's smart Stellar was trashed by 364 Winchester in the final (Catley)

Around 30 for the Accumulator and DD with Beany blasting 34 Julie Court early on as 118 Rob Bishop (Volvo estate) gave Ashford the bone and the Cheat did the same to Barry the Bull as Ashford recovered to hammer 279 Colin Coker (Sierra). 873 Roger Fuller (Sierra) attacked 715 Mick Prince and Winchester buried Bishop on the top bend as Prince met Ashford on the nose and Bishop fired back to pound 148 Ian Redden as 61 Karl Totham did the same to Prince who also copped one from an on opposite Young Gun. Prince kept it going to pummel Ashford but in doing so left himself open to an attack from Young Gun who then switched his attentions to Ashford as Winchester blasted 714 Adrian Hallistone en route to second behind the victorious 21 Jason Colbert and we went into the DD. Gizmo repaid Winchester for an earlier spin with a shot as 157 Michael Pigott (Capri) met the similarly mounted 557 Adrian Jackard on the nose as did Winchester and Gizmo. Bishop then buried Colbert hard as 157 Piglet assaulted 477 Amy Brown (Cavalier) and 557 Stalky gave Colbert a hard hit. Young Gun attacked Bishop with a T-bone and Winchester gave Gizmo a stiff passenger doors hit as Colbery repaid Bishop for the earlier burial. Young Gun then took hits from Colbert and Winchester with the latter going on to jack Piglet with two hard shots. Winchester then finished Colbert with two head-ons before Bishop gave him a stonking head-on on the top bend to kill both cars and end the event in a dead heat.

The Saloon Stockcar European attracted a strong field of 44 cars boosted by several visitors from the South West and Scotland with the first qualifying heat raising 23 cars and starting with an early spin for 114 Nick Courtier as 562 Trevor Gray removed 377 Mick Oslar who was spun in turn by 468 Kelven Nicholls as 169 Phil Gallon led the opening laps and the second placed 84 Lizzy Crowden-Murfin was hooked out by a lively Gray who soon took the lead. 382 Danny Hunt removed fellow west country pilot 666 Stan Petty who went out again soon after rejoining while 27 Roy Fuller took up the running from 417 Fred Powell and 624 Ryan Wilson. The luckless Petty was removed by Courtier as Fuller dumped out the back marking 420 Ivan Street en route to the win with Powell taking an excellent third and a late surge saw Hunt take third while Wilson deserves praise, the Scottish driver taking a fine fifth on his track debut.

624 Ryan Wilson did a great job on his Mildenhall debut (Wickham)

A couple less for heat two which suffered a false start at the first attempt when 141 Dean Roger suffered problems. We were soon underway though and 654 Paul Soper wasted no time in spinning 368 Steve Santry as 99 Tom Aldous set the pace from 26 Tommy Barnes and 311 Steve Newman. 428 Lee Sampson removed 312 Neil Payne which saw both cars hit the wall as 199 Phil Powell quickly moved into fifth as a spun 219 Clive Grief was clobbered by 511 Craig Barnett and Newman flicked out Barnes. Newman continued to spin Aldous and take the lead but he picked up a flat and was easy pickings for 183 Andy Mews as 2 Paul Tuppen briefly took over until he lost out at the hands of the back marking 258 Mark Underschut giving Mews control. Barnett dived up the inside of Powell to claim second which resulted in Powell loosing a couple of spots as Mews won from Barnett with 24 Rob Rabjohns just beating 677 Eddie Darby across the line for third.

All 24 non qualifiers returned for the consolation with Newman starting early spinning Petty as the leading Aldous was walled by Gallon which promoted 525 Jason Elvin into the lead. 500 Steve Royston spun 19 Andy Thomas as Rogers hit Elvin but it took the both the front two wide and Crowden grabbed the lead with Tuppen going second as Payne also spun as did Aldous thanks to 93 Ada Hadden. Thomas recovered from a spin to take around Haddon as Grief spun both Tuppen and Crowden, which was to take the lead although at this point he was seen to be a lap down. Street spun Petty and a recovered Crowden lost out again, this time to Royston as a spinning 6 Horry Barnes was struck by Newman. 272 Wayne Doddington took the chequered but a lap sheet check reveal Grief as the true winner with Rogers third, another fine performance for a track debut.

The calm before the storm as the cars grid for the European (Kev Wickham)

Fuller won the coin toss after heat two and duly won pole position for the championship with the rest of the top 10 from heat one behind him on the outside in the order they finished, the heat two qualifiers lining up accordingly on the outside with the eight consolation qualifiers at the back. Sadly Newman failed to grid while Royston had a late scare having to change a wheel on the track when he suffered flat pulling onto the track. Santry was the first casualty as Fuller took the early lead and there were further spins for 74 Tam Tweedie and Powell while 512 Darren Barnett turned aside Rabjohns. Mews eased passed Fuller into the lead and quickly spun the recovered Rabjohns as Darby moved into third and Wilson spun Rogers. 402 Shaun Webstar also went round and Royston removed Santry as Fuller reclaimed the lead but was taken out by the back marking Santry. Mews took over but it was short lived as Darby passed him with Craig Barnett close behind, Darren Barnett then getting better of his brother to go second before Hunt stormed through to take the lead as Mews retired with problems. Craig Barnett was lying third and spun Darby but the National Champion slowed his attacker enough to allow Hunt to break away and take the title from a recovered Craig Barnett while brother Darren got the better of Doddington for third.

The big four in the European (left to right), 512 Darren Barnett (3rd), 511 Craig Barnett (2nd), 382 Danny Hunt (1st) and 272 Wayne Doddington (4th) (Kev Wickham)

The Allcomers fielded the biggest grid of the night with 29 cars for it. Aldous led them away as Payne spun Tuppen and 51 Paul Licquorice did the same to Royston and a recovered Tuppen flicked out Martin only to loose out to Courtier who was spun by Payne. A big pit bend sort out saw Webstar spin Craig Barnett and 720 Shane Brown which also claimed Darren Barnett and Darby as elsewhere Petty took out Martin but was removed in turn by Payne. Aldous still led from Rogers as a spinning Darby was hit hard by Craig Barnett which also caught up Hunt. Crowden moved into second as Webstar was taken out by Fuller and Licquorice was thundered into the pit gate hard by 401 Steve Webstar. Martin then spun Crowden from second but she made a good recovered but it was in vain as Craig Barnett spun her with Aldous winning from fellow white top Rogers with Fuller third.

Another decent Saturday night's racing. The bangers were a mixed bag with the second heat and last race the pick, the final had its moments but the opener and consolation were tame while the Saloon Stockcars entered a typically fast and furious championship meeting, although perhaps the opening races didn't have the high levels of action which were expected.
