The 2010 staging of the Mildenhall Team Championship raised a fine field of 114 National Bangers spread over 31 teams with 22 of them raising a full quota of four drivers. Extra credit as well to the near 20 drivers who raced at Birmingham the previous night while the pits were as always Mondeo dominated with only a smattering of variety in a completely FWD based entry although several made the effort on the paint front with smart motors.

Despite significant snowfall around the county, Mildenhall was extremely fortunate enough to miss almost all of it with only a light amount falling on Friday night, which was still evident at start time on the back straight and pit bend. Thankfully following much hard work by the track team the shale remained very hard and despite becoming a little slippery as the afternoon wore on the track remained far superior to what many had expected. Unfortunately despite repeated pleas to the teams in group A that they would be out first only 20 cars gathered in time for heat one which still started around 10 minutes after start time, the small grid coupled with the slippery surface leading to a very subdued opener. CB405 Shane Tilley hit the spun KB287 Dean Quinsee on the nose and was duly collected by AA602 Shaun Cooper and FA128 Andy Shipp before KB250 Wayne Atkinson provided the best hit by a country mile when he followed in CB503 Jordan Murray a treat on the pit bend only to then be stuffed into the concrete blocks by TT585 Kevin Giles. KB316 James Cushion took the win from MA190 Steve Bailey and 585 Big Ears and 250 Wacky named the best entertainer. However with three cars in the top team it was the Midnight Runners A who set the early pace.

Groups B and C for heat two and a much better field of 32 car which started in manic fashion as WL690 Jack Wilkins buried Ministox graduate GL560 Andrew Milner with WL162 Rob Wheatley offering an assist before GB86 Alec Savage buried ST391 Paul Allen (Cavalier) into CL164 Barry Sedgwick and GL301 Tom Wellham clobbered the Midlands man in the front wheel which left the Gladiator open to a fierce blitz from CA456 Nathan Roberts. KM262 Jason Barnard meanwhile followed in MB331 Jason Jackson a treat and 162 the Jackal buried BB425 Martin Stopher (Vectra). Savage then blasted DV188 John Reeves as BT437 Chris Bailey T-boned Milner which set the latter up for a colossal hit from Roberts. 331 Boxer then fenced Bailey before the race turned quiet for a lap or two. The action returned when 425 Mr Vauxhall stuffed the Jackal and Bailey into Wellham’s wreck, Mr Vauxhall staying with the Jackal to fence him very hard on turn one as 188 Victor stuffed the luckless Allen. Mr Vauxhall impressed again as he lunged as YN688 Steve Collins and KM278 Tom Hills and buried them into the wrecks on the pit bend. Harding recovered to T-bone YN362 Liam Friel, GL363 Sam Keep picking up the former and burying him into the driver’s door of Bailey. The latter opted to bail out just as Roberts was homing in for a belting hit on the Gladiator. The reds were out immediately but thankfully Bailey didn’t suffer any serious injuries and the race soon resumed with a lap sheet order restart. Roberts was on the case again as he followed in WL77 Martin Wilkins on the road bend as Savage piled CL34 Paul Beavis into 278 Sex Pest. DV442 Sean Crittenden then lunged at 262 the Verger as 77 House delivered a revenge T-bone on Roberts only to take a big revenge T-bone from Harding. YN382 Jack Foster Jnr chalked up a flag to flag win from GB160 Perry Willings and Savage and with GB371 Jason Cobbold sixth, Team Green B took the lead while Roberts was judged the best entertainer.

The teams in group C mustered 27 cars between them for heat three which enjoyed a superb opening lap. Things began with OP27 Terry King following FB381 Craig Upson as RB928 Emmerson Prime gave OP787 Mike Amoss an assist in running in LP103 John Seex hard. OP228 Brett Slade (Primera) meanwhile smashed into the infield blocks as AB604 Ross Cooper followed in KA210 John Ellison a treat on the pit bend. Just behind this and GA525 Wes Starmer ran in PB779 Luke Allen as on the top bend the lively 27 Telbert ran in AB100 Callum White allowing GA82 Wayne Quinn to nail the latter as BA617 Jack Overy buried 928 Tyrone to end the first lap. The night action saw LP107 Michael Seex stuffed KA170 Darren Teal into 210 Slim before 100 Captain Cock landed a hard T-bone on the spun Overy. Telbert now buried 381 Shrug with the latter taking a head-on from RB927 Justin Margetson as Cooper now blasted Telbert hard only to take a package in turn from KA320 Paul Seymour. 82 Quinny nailed the latter in turn as BA415 Scott Cornish homed in for a shot on Cooper and Captain Cock butted heads with the luckless Shrug. 107 Seexy then lunged at and fence RB8 Dale Woolnough as Cornish and GA88 Ash Burton combined to bury 779 Munch into the infield blocks. The latter instantly turned round and delivered a big revenge head-on to Cornish before re-joining the race only to be buried by Quinny. PB137 Jay Chilton then also turned round to nail Cornish on the back straight as 88 Ace Ash took the win from Seexy and Cornish, Cooper taking the entertainer award.

Into the second round of heats and the fourth heat boasted two cars per team from the squads in groups A and B and they raised just under 30 cars between them. Another hectic start saw RA313 Craig Osbourn bury PA176 Ady Gibbs as 382 Chubby did likewise to WL768 Danny McSweeny as GB160 Perry Willings tagged the spinning Quinnsee and CL34 Paul Beavis was spat into the fence at the end of the back straight by the traffic. ST196 Ben Harrison then buried Savage into the spun McSweeney as 176 Gibbo singled out CB989 Alex Gjoni while AA400 Kevin Shinn gave BB807 Chris Murfin a big hit on the home straight. Big Ears meanwhile stuffed the luckless McSweeney which set the latter up for a wicked T-bone from TM119 Davey Cox as Osbourn fenced CB347 Dave Bull before the reds came out to assist a shaken TT506 Ricky Clarke on the road bend. A depleted field for the restart and after a quiet start AA602 Shaun Cooper tagged the well smart KB105 Billy Standing over the rear wheel while ST648 Kyle Guyler dumped FA912 Kieran Greenaway into Clarke’s vacated motor. BB312 Tom Reynolds stuffed PA79 Ricky Twell as 602 Mr Moody lunged at and buried WL690 Jack Wilkins on the pit bend, the latter evening the score with a similar attack half a lap later. The race then turned quiet until Osbourn took a wild lunge at and fenced 648 the Dart which also claimed 79 Twelly by left the former open to a storming hit from 400 Shinny. 312 Turbo duly homed in with a stiff shot on the latter as Bull spotted Twelly for a head-on, the latter then copping one over the rear wheel from MA239 Steve Carter (Cougar). Big Ears took the win from Quinsee and FA388 Emmerson Fairweather as some late action saw Bull again hit Twelly and Mr Moody run Greenaway into some dead cars a couple of seconds after the reds came out. Shinny took the entertainer trophy this time. Meanwhile decent scores for the Motley Krew B and Team 22 put them in contention.

Groups C and D for the fifth heat and again just under 30 cars with the spinning PB17 Aaron Gray T-boned by LP746 Henry Greer before AB551 Tony Walsham hit the former head-on and buried him into the Armco backwards. On the second lap KA170 Darren Teal thundered in FB237 Gary Nash, getting a small assist from Cooper with OP547 Tony McNeil zeroing in for a rated hit on Teal. Another massive pit bend push then saw PB519 Lee Middleton blast BA920 James Medley which in turn buried DV349 Lee Saunders and left the latter hanging off the fence. 88 Ace Ash then T-boned 519 Knuckles as Gray turned it on with shots to CA552 Karl Douglas and Medley while Cooper stuffed KM117 Karl Dack. 547 the BFA continued to thundered Greer into the pit bend carnage but in turn collected 349 Finbarr which rolled the latter to bring the reds out. Unfortunately far worse damage was done to the fence in the crash with a post ripped out and shattered with such force it also removed a section of the concrete wall. This resulted in a massive repair project and unfortunately a near hour delay before the race could resume. The race restarted with Telbert hitting the spun 320 Smiler head-on, the latter then ran in by Seexy before Overy dished out a stiff head-on to the spun Knuckles. 552 Blacknuts meanwhile buried KM220 Tom Pavitt with a driver’s side up attack as FB74 Matt Hill fenced Ace Ash by the pit gate. This allowed Cooper to land a wicked hit on 74 Ninja as Gray homed in for an equally hard shot on Ace Ash. Medley then thundered AB551 Tony Walsham into the aforementioned wreckage with Cooper picking up Greer and running him into Walsham before Gray arrived for a belting hit on Medley only to take an equally big one in turn from Overy. BT303 Wayne Linsdale blasted Cooper as GA682 Paul Sparrow nailed the recovered Ninja and BT209 Ben Hayward ran in Greer superbly on the pit bend. Gray, Medley, Walsham and Overy traded hits on the home straight, the former and latter briefly spilling onto the infield before returning to the shale where Overy landed a T-bone on Gray. Meanwhile MB730 Dean Mayes spotted 117 Kamikaze attacking the leading MB208 Jimmy Randall and swiftly buried him. Kamikaze recovered only to be run in on the pit bend by Finbarr with Kamikaze then tagging the passing 208 Finger but the latter had already taken the win from Teal and Blacknuts with Cooper the best entertainer this time.

Groups A and B again met for heat six but with three cars per team permitted the fields rose to 39 cars and this one enjoyed an explosive start. CL164 Barry Sedgwick got things going as he followed in Allen hard on the first bend only to take a stiff revenge T-bone from 196 Ginner. Another huge push saw McSweeney thundered in by AA603 Jon Cooper with FA128 Andy Shipp offering a small assist before 316 Mr Cush buried 190 Pikey head-on into Sedgwick. Turbo then blasted McSweeney with 648 the Dart powering into the former as AA417 Dan Davey picked up and followed in BB807 Chris Murfin hard on the pit bend. The Dart then followed in Osbourn for as BB384 John Golden laid into Big Ears only to take one in turn from Shinny. The Dart meanwhile again found Osbourn and followed him in full chat on the pit bend with 128 Shippy running into the latter as GB370 John Cobbold collected the spun 807 Smurf in the door, the latter in trouble and the reds coming out but Shinny was already committed to a big hit on the Team Black man. Mercifully Smurf was only shaken and the event soon resumed although the restart proved much quieter. It started well enough as Chubby followed in Davey superbly on the road bend as Mr Cush dumped TM67 Mark Whittaker into Allen’s wreck. Shinny landed a big hit on CB503 Jordan Murray on the road bend to trigger a small pile-up around them. Gibbo then buried 160 Pez into Osbourn’s wreck before the race turned quiet at the end save Bull earning his dismissal when he rammed GL363 Sam Keep on the infield. TM119 Davey Cox took the flag from the recovered Pez and FA61 Karl Totham with Shinny scooping his second entertainer trophy.

Groups C and D for the final heat and again with three cars per team it raised a strong field of 35.Another lively start saw Knuckles run in 82 Quinny as just ahead of them Telbert followed in Chilton which tore the front leg out of the former and allowed Cornish to land a stiff hit. KM262 Jason Barnard nailed Cornish in turn with Walsham blasting the former as a small pile-up formed on turn three. Shrug then fenced Amoss on the home straight, the latter climbing the wall and rolling onto his roof to bring the reds out again and another complete restart was ordered. This began with Woolnough fencing SV741 Charlie Davies before Ross Cooper continued his rated day with a shot on 262 the Verger. The Finger then buried Walsham into 209 Minge with the latter then taking a stiff hit from 525 Wes. The latter then delivered a savage T-bone to Knuckles on turn three and Cooper belted Wes on the nose in turn before Sparrow also laid into the luckless Sparrow with a big hit over the front wheel. The race then turned quiet until 103 Seexy hit the lurking Kamikaze on the nose, Cooper duly blasting the latter before repeating the move a lap later. Kamikaze managed to turn round and Cooper happily met him head-on which in turn nearly wiped out Finbarr as 103 Seexy again hammered Kamikaze, the latter then getting further shots from Wes and 188 Victor. Linsdale took the win this time from Victor and 107 Seexy while the superb Cooper claimed a third entertainer trophy.

Team 22 narrowly led Team Green B heading into the final and the top 10 teams raised just under 30 cars between them, the aforementioned top two being the only sides to raise all four cars. However this proved a very subdued affair, Greenaway being fired to the fence by the traffic before a small pile-up formed on the road bend. GB371 Jason Cobbold fenced Linsdale while 119 Cruncher span Savage into the infield blocks. The back straight saw Smiler land a hard hit on LP455 Luke Cornish (Vectra) on the back straight as Jason Cobbold delivered the final action when he fenced DV259 Dan Poole hard. John Cobbold raced to the win ahead of Wes and Quinsee which meant Team Green B snatched the title, just two points clear of Team 22 who beat Team Green A for second by a mere point.

With the meeting now past the five hour mark a most impressive 28 returned for the demo which proved to be a savage affair. Greenaway fired the first shot as he buried Shinny before McSweeny turned round at speed and met Blacknuts in a mental head-on. 602 Mr Moody blasted the latter in turn as in a massive crash, Jason Cobbold buried 603 the Younger Hitman full chat on turn four, unfortunately the latter copping the hit in the driver’s door in an incident which earned the former a suspension from racing. Just as they hit the fence Greenaway arrived with a massive hit on Cobbold which launched the Younger Hitman skyward, the 603 Mondeo standing on its nose before landing on top of the fence. Mr Moody then delivered a monster hit on Greenaway before Roberts completed the train with the reds then coming out to check the Younger Hitman was ok. The event soon resumed with Sam Keep taking head-ons from Roberts and Cornish with Quinny blasting Roberts in turn. Mr Moody now blasted the luckless Keep only to take one in turn from John Cobbold as Roberts now stuck it to GL367 Tom Keep with Mr Moody blasting the former in turn before Greenaway also hammered Tom Keep. BA67 Rickie Beasley marked his first race of the day by blasting Mr Moody who duly blasted Greenaway hard as Tom Keep’s rough ride ended with shots from Harding and Cornish. 100 Captain Cock then span Harding into the blocks as a road bend wrecking train saw Savage blast Captain Cock only to take a hard T-bone from Shinny. Chubby then stuffed Mr Moody into MB433 Ben Smith and kept glued to the Aftermath man to follow him into the pit gate. Chubby quickly turned round and landed a big T-bone on Mr Moody with John Cobbold arriving for a head-on to the latter. Greenaway also weighed in on Mr Moody and was duly blasted hard by John Cobbold as Chubby picked up Shinny and followed him flat out in McSweeney’s wreck leaving the latter a massive mess. Wes then stuffed the recovered Shinny into Blacknuts which allowed Chubby to deliver a hard shot on the Aftermath man as John Cobbold met Medley on the nose only to be T-boned by Smith for his trouble. Wes blasted the Midnight Runner guest in turn as Cornish, who had been disqualified for a lack of contact, blasted Greenaway, Shinny then going head to head with Medley as did John Cobbold and Greenaway. Chubby finished Shinny with a stiff hit as John Cobbold met Medley in a hard head-on with Wes administering a decent hit to his team mate in turn. The latter fled the scene and Chubby powered in hard on John Cobbold only to take one from Smith who continued to hit Medley on the nose. Smith then veered onto the infield for a second time and was duly disqualified leaving Wes the only official runner and thus the reds came out but the latter two continued trading blows, along with Cornish leading to Wes also being disqualified and Medley was therefore judged to be the last legal runner and he took the win. The efforts of Cooper, Shinny, Mr Moody and Greenaway both in the DD and throughout the day saw them take cash awards for their entertaining efforts.

The 2010 points decider raised a most decent field of 19 Ministox, the entry boosted by 212 Ben Bates from Incarace and 586 Daniel Petters from PRI. A big day for 355 Sid Magewick who brought two cars, looking to seal the Mildenhall track championship before dashing to Wimbledon for the London Open Championship.

All out for heat one with 344 Ross Fisher attacking 320 Charley Streeton from the off as 390 Karl Morris made the early running and behind 369 Liam Santry lunged at 383 Shane Harvey to move into second as at the rear of the field 306 Daniel Parker removed 309 Ray Petty in a battle of the silver tops. Morris still led while Harvey and 327 Mick Maskall Jnr barged past Santry into second and third, Santry then having Petters out as Madgewick attacked Streeton and 350 Thomas Parrin fired into Fisher. Magewick meanwhile lunged at Fisher which sent the latter wide enough for 315 Triston Claydon to nip through as well, these two then joining Parrin in a three abreast battle along the back straight. 322 Thomas Fox attacked Fisher as 394 Liam Aspin punted 361 Ashley Byron into the fence while Santry was a late retirement. Parker now removed Fox as Morris held his nerve and finally secured a long overdue first win, Harvey second and Magewick winning a very close battle for third with Claydon and Maskall Jnr which secured him the track championship.

With Magewick on the road to London, the remaining 18 cars contested the second heat which sadly followed a lengthy delay to fix the fence in the previous banger race. Aspin set the pace this time as Claydon fired into 382 Tom Foster and Santry had 316 Sam Dace out at the end of the home straight. Maskall Jnr moved up to second and Morris to third from the back of his grade as Petty attacked Foster and Parrin sent Fisher around. Bates then ran into the spun Petters. Claydon continued his progress by attacking Parrin, the latter then lunging at Bates as they fought over places while Maskall Jnr also went for Aspin to take the lead with four to run. Bates fired back at Parrin which in turn sent Fox wide as Aspin regained the lead but the battle up front allowed Claydon to close and another hit from Maskall Jnr on Aspin allowed Claydon to snatch the top spot. He raced to the win as behind the battle for second win to the wire, Maskall Jnr landing a last bend hit on Aspin over second but the latter held on while this allowed Morris to nip through and snatch third.

Still 18 cars again for the final with Santry and Harvey battling over the lead at the start with the former getting away while Aspin squeezed into second and Morris battled past Maskall Jnr for fourth. Parrin again attacked Fox before the latter crashed out on the road bend with Aspin. Bates then hit the home straight wall and climbed the Armco and rolled in spectacular fashion which brought the reds out instantly despite the car landing on its wheels and a complete restart was ordered. This began with Dace spinning as Harvey led the way but it was short lived as Morris span Aspin who was collected by the pack and left stranded across the track to again bring the reds out. A depleted field for the third attempt with Parrin quickly sticking the bumper in on Streeton as Harvey led from Santry and Maskall Jnr, the latter then attacking Santry in the race for second. Fisher and Streeton both suffered spins as Maskall Jnr had Santry out and the latter was struck by Morris. Claydon was again making rapid progress as he stormed to fifth as the race hit half way and he soon passed Parrin for fourth but he wasn’t counting on Morris hooking him out as they scrapped for third which allowed Harvey to extend his advantage. Streeton then span Santry as Morris lunged at Fox as they raced for fourth which in turn sent Claydon into another half spin. Harvey took the flag from Maskall Jnr and Parrin as in another superb finish, Claydon lunged at Fox in the race for sixth but it sent them both wide and Foster and Parker were able to get through and snatch the spots.

Down to just 13 cars for the Allcomers with Aspin setting the pace as Maskall Jnr attacked Morris in an early battle for third and Parrin lunged at Fox in a bid to take sixth. Santry then briefly went off the pace and was rammed by Morris but both quickly got back up to speed although this allowed Aspin to break away as Parrin lunged at and sent Foster spinning only to get a taste of his own medicine from Fisher. Streeton then attacked Maskall Jnr to promote himself to fourth while Fox hooked out Claydon to take sixth but it was Aspin who raced to his maiden win ahead of Santry and Morris.

Heat one: 390 Karl Morris, 383, 355, 315, 327, 350, 212, 344, 306, 394
Heat two: 315 Triston Claydon, 394, 390, 327, 369, 320, 212, 309, 350, 344
Grand Final: 383 Shane Harvey, 327, 350, 309, 390, 382, 306, 315, 322, 320
Allcomers: 394 Liam Aspin, 369, 390, 320, 327, 322, 309, 382, 344, 315

Despite a couple of poor races, there was some quality action to be found from both formulas during the afternoon although a couple of nasty incidents and the lengthy delay to fix the fence half way through the meeting took the edge off things. Full credit is once again deserving to the drivers who braved the arctic conditions and continued to do so during the day and also to the fans who turned out as well.
