2Litre RWD Bangers, Saloon Stockcars and BriSCA F2 Stockcars

The third annual 2Litre RWD Banger session at Mildenhall raised a storming field of 108 cars on July 24 with visitors from far and wide including welcome Welshman 252 Gareth Griffiths (estate). On the car front the Cortina was the most popular mount (all cars are Cortinas unless otherwise stated), just outnumbering the Granada by 27 to 21. The former group included an outbreak of Mk3 from 157 Lee Gower, 225, Simon Bye, 217 Dave Truman, 492 Dean Harper, 507 Danny Brown and 547 Tony McNeil, the former’s being an estate. Meanwhile the Granada entry included a used hearse for 346 Scott Saunders and a fresh limo for 500 Bill Wenham. Next popular was the Capri with 12 while the Sierra numbered nine leaving plenty more variety. Of note there were five Triumph 2000s including fresh ones for 25 Mark Thomas and 303 Brian Cope, a Carlton limo from 160 Perry Willings and a used one for 925 Aaron Preece. More vintage came in the shape of three A60s although only 807 Chris Murfin’s Cambridge was fresh and 310 Chas Lee returned his bubble. 159 Darren Scarrow returned his Skyline from the previous year and sticking with the Jap theme and 382 Jack Foster Jnr and 523 John Swanborough debuted a Cressida and Laurel respectively which were both well smart as were many more in the pits.

32 cars for the opener with 303 Andy Oliver (Capri) sending 288 Aaron Phillips’ Sierra into the blocks early on only to take a swift revenge hit from Lee. 504 Rob Woolnough (Granada) treated the spun 8 Dale Woolnough (Capri) to a head-on as Lee turned round to attack 221 Michael Whitelock (Granada estate) and 487 Dave Silley (Capri) blasted the superbly turned out 40 Pete Stanley (Mk5). 604 Ross Cooper (Granada) connected with a hard T-bone on Lee, the Aftermath man then delivering an ever stiffer T-bone to 46 Wayne Pecker (Mk5) next time round. Meanwhile a push into the road bend saw 487 Orville buried hard by 90 Joe Harboard (BMW E30 estate) and 100 Callum White (Granada) which left the former in trouble and saw the reds come out. A depleted field for the restart saw 483 Mark Salisbury (Sapphire) find the fence with Griffiths and 503 John Bran (Granada) then thundered 511 Helen Licquorice (BMW 316) into the latter with 282 Bobby Daniel (Volvo 340) dumping Cooper into Bran which set the Aftermath man up for a head-on from Rob Woolnough but the latter was destroyed by a cracking hit from 400 Kevin Shinn (Granada). Pecker rammed Cooper on opposite as 21 Jason Colbert (Granada) raced to the win from 602 Shaun Cooper (Granada) and 22 Dave Vincent (Capri).

A slightly bigger field for the second heat with 116 Nat Cohn (Carlton) fencing 309 Andy Oliver (Omega) early on before 141 Andy Neal (Capri) and 200 Wayne Holton (Omega) combined to bury 295 Danny Nunn (Capri). 164 Barry Sedgwick (Sapphire) hit the spun 113 Steve Sedgwick (Mk5) on the nose as 439 Danny Sutton (Mk5) hammered Gower. 523 Swampy put away 473 Mark Nicholls (Mk5) before 492 Mulley followed in 262 Kevin Lee (Mercedes C200) in nicely and 460 Lewis Barber (Mk4) wasted Gower with a wicked hit on the home straight. The race turned quiet until 62 Trevor Buckley used his decade old Steller to bury Swampy and 313 Craig Osborn (Mk5) treated 346 Muttley to a T-bone. 547 the BFA met 188 John Reeves’ Opel Manta head-on before Barry Sedgwick piled Osbourn into 116 No Luck Nat which left Osbourn open to a cracking hit from the BFA, the former taking further hammer with 200 Skippy T-boned him. 439 Sutty blasted the Thattadoo man in turn as No Luck Nat took a wild lunge at 295 Nunny but fenced himself in the process as Buckley motored his rapid Steller to the win from 86 Alec Savage (Granada) and 349 Lee Saunders (Granada estate).

Due to a number of drivers not contesting a heat just 24 cars assembled for heat three but it still delivered. 320 Paul Seymour (Mk5) made an early lunge at 313 John Cullingford (Sapphire) and fenced the Bad News man which also claimed 787 Mike Amoss’ BMW 316 and 237 Gary Nash (Capri). 70 Ant Long (Granada estate) opened his account with a burial on Salisbury before he blasted 10 Sam Topley (Capri) hard. 122 James Woodley (Triumph 2000) hit the spun 382 Chubby on the nose as 237 Nasha did the same to 303 Wayne Linsdale (Mk5) which allowed Scarrow to nail the latter as Long continued with hard hit on 320 Smiler and 395 Steve Hale (Mk5). 278 Tom Hills (Mk5) blasted the Brampton based star in turn before 313 Cully turned Nasha into the wall. The race then turned quiet but enjoyed a fine finish as 617 Jack Overy (Granada estate) landed a perfectly places last bend hit on 6 Lee West (Granada) sending him spinning to steal the win, West recovering for second and Chubby third.

With ample repair time and several fresh cars out for the first time a monster field of 52 cars returned for the consolation and they served up an epic display of wrecking. 401 Steve Hemmings (Capri) set the wheels in motion by burying Dale Woolnough as 125 Roy Preece (Carlton estate) was mauled by 160 Pez and 401 Psycho, the latter then T-boned by Topley. 538 Jake Swan (Omega) delivered a big hit on the Metal Wrecker as did Smiler as Pecker tagged Steve Sedgwick over the rear wheel. 210 Steve Haywood (Sapphire) then T-boned the Motley Krew man as 788 Darren Gathercole (Triumph 2000) blasted the Omega estate of 117 Karl Dack. Pez hammered Muttley as Aaron Preece turned round to attack Pecker while the lively Psycho nailed 221 Mad Mike. With the track now becoming blocked 539 Danny Allen (Capri) blasted 209 Ben Hayward (Sierra) and was swiftly dealt a hard hit from Rob Woolnough. Scarrow now leathered 48 Brian Redden (Mk4) as 273 Kevin McClagish (Mk4) laid into 830 Lee White (Omega) and Long went head to head with 837 Pete Nash (Triumph 2000). Swampy turned round and nailed 538 Swanny Jnr as 48 Sly Bri was further wrecked by Ross Cooper before Barber trashed 188 Victor in style. 385 Paul Evans (Omega) turned round to meet Muttley on the nose as 210 Steveo nailed Topley hard. 837 Mr Happy bounced back and hammered Barber but took a rated hit from 100 Captain Cock in turn as Barber battled on and hammered Bran. Sutty then scored on 90 Joe Ninety as Steve Sedgwick laid into the game Barber. Evans continued on opposite with a bit hit on 830 Stretch who duly hit Amoss in turn. Ross Cooper now blasted 260 Spencer (Capri) and Steveo again set about the Kent contingent with a shot on Steve Sedgwick only to take one himself from 417 Dan Davey (Granada estate). Davey continued with a head-on to Stretch before meeting 117 Kamikaze in the same way. Davey completed another lap and slaughtered Muttley’s hearse with an epic hit, Joe Ninety also weighing in on the Management man only to take one from Steve Sedgewick in turn and he was hammered by Ross Cooper as a result. Stretch and Steveo enjoyed one final head-on as Davey took a fine win from Joe Ninety and Steve Sedgwick, just six going the distance.

28 for the final with Barry Sedgwick spinning 400 Shinny into the concrete as on the road bend 602 Mr Moody picked up Nasha with Mullet offering a later assist to thunder in the 237 Capri full bore in an epic crash with decimated Nasha in rated fashion and brought the reds out immediately. The race soon resumed with 154 Tony Lawton (Oxford) hitting the spun Steve Sedgwick on the nose as the BFA met Barry Sedgwick in similar fashion. Shinny now blasted Steveo as Mr Moody hammered 807 Murf, Vincent attacking the former which allowed West to T-bone the Aftermath man. 313 Cully meanwhile raced to the win ahead of Vincent and Overy.

Most disappointingly the curfew was reached resulting in the programmed Accumulator qualifier and DD being cancelled.

A cracking field of 44 Saloon Stockcars gathered for round five of their track championship, the entry swelled by 777 Alan Ainsle from Scotland and 18 Peter Zoontjens from Holland.

Owing to the size of the entry an extra heat was added and heat one was for the white and yellow grade and still raised 22 cars. 19 Karl Stubbles was the first to show spinning 190 John Wagstaff as 964 Kenny Peters set the pace from 731 Barry Wade and 399 David Savidge fenced 140 Joe Cole. 13 Lee Petters buried 184 Marty Colliver as 26 Tommy Barnes span Wagstaff and he was clobbered by both 377 Mick Oslar and 389 Ryan Santry. The latter recovered to spin Petters as Wade span from second before Stubbles took over up front. Colliver walloped the spun 728 Kris Woods head-on as Savidge put Ainsle in the wall. Santry span 912 Andi Newman into the concrete as 698 Danny Colliver span Savidge and 719 David Grief did the same to Barnes. Oslar had Andi Newman and 738 Gary Munns out only to suffer a similar fate from Stubbles as Santry removed 233 Rob Aldridge. Stubbles raced to the win from Peters and Wade.

Yellow, blues and reds for heat two and 27 cars with Munns and Woods suffering early spins as 570 Simon Venni had 191 Shaun McMillan round and 499 Dave Aldous removed 360 Carl Waterfield. Wagstaff led but it wasn’t long until Newman took over with 420 Ivan Street then storming to the front. 156 Darren Goudy fenced Venni as 2 Paul Tuppen took a big lunge at 43 Karl Gilbert. Newman reclaimed the lead while 305 Nigel Parker squeezed 641 Willie Skoyles Jnr into the wall and Tuppen fenced Danny Colliver. Woods attacked the luckless Skoyles Jnr before McMillan had Zoontjens around. Parker meanwhile fenced 131 Timmy Barnes only to then be spun by Aldous as 311 Steve Newman span 18 Jamie Clayton with 115 Scott Aldridge fencing them both. 428 Lee Sampson had both Tuppen and Gilbert out. 219 Luke Grief then buried 402 Shaun Webster savagely on the pit bend while the fired up Aldous removed Steve Newman and Clayton, Zoontjens running into the pair. Meanwhile Andi Newman crashed out in the final stages and 490 Ian Jarman snatched the win from Goudy and Parker.

The final heat was for the white, blue and red grade and saw the grid rise to 30 cars with Tommy Barnes spinning Jarman from the off as Grief this time fenced 401 Steve Webster. Santry set the pace as Sampson span Rob Aldridge into Savidge before the spun 312 Neil Payne was collected by Shaun Webster, the latter then catching fire by the pit gate to bring the red flags out immediately with a complete restart ordered. This was led away by Santry as McMillan fenced Scott Aldridge, the former then doing the same to Zoontjens before he was sent spinning by Waterfield. Wade went round and was hit by Tuppen as Santry butted heads with Savidge which handed the lead to Rob Aldridge as Timmy Barnes took a lunge at Venni. The red grade now stormed through with Parker bursting into the lead, Grief and Skoyles Jnr on his tail as the former removed Savidge. Grief stuck the bumper in on Parker as Jarman joined the mix the final bend seeing Grief lunge at and spin Skoyles Jnr to take third as Parker held on to win a thriller, Jarman in third, the race ending with Aldous spinning Timmy Barnes and the luckless Skoyles Jnr being removed by Waterfield.

30 cars again for the all in final which was another stormer. Wagstaff started by spinning Street only to be dumped out by Danny Colliver, the latter then also having Munns around as Santry led from 321 Ryan Mee and Stubbles. Rob Aldridge had Savidge out and Goudy fired into Clayton hard. Stubbles moved into second as Parker lunged hard at Venni and Timmy Barnes removed 22 Karl Petters. Steve Webster span Sampson while Grief stepped up to spin Parker and then Shaun Webster. Santry still led from Stubbles with Woods the next to show before Andi Newman moved into third. Venni span the luckless Karl Petters as Grief attacked Sampson. Andi Newman removed Shaun Webster as McMillan came under fire from both Goudy and Steve Webster. Stubbles battled past Santry for the lead while Timmy Barnes had raced into third. Rob Aldridge T-boned the spun Mee hard and Santry sent Karl Stubbles into the wall. Santry reclaimed the lead as Stubbles crashed out but it was short lived as Timmy Barnes soon took over with Andi Newman on his tail. Goudy span Gilbert as Andi Newman span Timmy Barnes for the lead but their battle allowed Skoyles Jnr and Aldous to close in. A hit from the latter on Skoyles Jnr fired him forward and Andi Newman sent Aldous spinning leaving Skoyles Jnr to win from Andi Newman and Santry, Venni ending another sublime race by spinning Sampson.

Heat one: 19 Karl Stubbles, 964, 731, 312, 420, 728, 738, 698, 912, 13

A quite incredible 70 BriSCA F2 Stockcars competed in round five of the track championship, this the biggest entry of 2010 on shale thus far and a line up which featured no less than nine Dutch drivers, a pair from Scotland and one from the Isle of Mann.

22 cars for the opening heat with 549 Andrew Bottomley spinning 917 Nigel Wiles from the off and he was duly collected by 291 Craig Tomblin as 498 Derek Cayzer set the pace while 259 Simon Farrington stuck the bumper in on 606 Andy Palmer who was making good progress as was 662 Steve Wycherly who was the lead blue top. A big hit from H24 Willie Peeters on Farrington saw the former lose time with a half spin as 597 Barry Clow passed 466 Jamie Start for second, the latter then coming under fire from Palmer as 379 Stu Cayzer challenged and took second from Clow. Derek Cayzer meanwhile survived a tangle with 548 Martin Lowe to win ahead of Stu Cayzer with a late hit from Palmer on Wycherly seeing him snatch third. On the line H19 Jelle Kurtjens just beat Farrington for sixth.

22 again for the second heat but the reds were soon out when a four car pile-up left 496 Anthony Dakin stranded. Down to 19 for the restart with 588 Matt Pettit leading them away as 871 Mark Simpson landed a hit on 631 Ron Ferguson and 52 Pete Robertson did the same to 922 Graham Legg. 905 Rob Mitchell had 319 Gordon Ferguson around as Lee rode up the side of 728 Carl Pilkinton in spectacular fashion in the race for third. Robertson came under fire from 260 Anthony Winters as 186 George Turiccki raced into third before Legg landed a big hit on Robertson to take them both into the fence. Turiccki meanwhile picked up a flat in the final staged and bravely battled home for fourth, aided when a big last bend hit from Simpson on Waters wiped them both out. Pettit meanwhile held off 925 Paul Wilson for a flag to flag win.

With a few late arrivals there were 26 cars for the third heat and 392 Mark Short got things going by spinning H17 Arjen Hiddinga as 423 Neil Darby made the running. H259 Ben Hawinkels put the bumper in on 449 Mark Dorrill but the latter survived to take up the running with Hawinkels his nearest rival. 495 John Cayzer used his nerf rail to barge past the latter and then he moved into the lead only to drift wide and lose several spots as 924 Martyn Pearson moved to the front. H646 Rene de Groot ran into the spun 133 Jeff Byron as Pearson raced to the win, 798 Mark Sargent surviving a last bend hit from 702 Allan Cooper to take second.

A massive field of 36 contested the consolation which was as expected an action packed affair. 917 Nigel Wiles set the pace as H30 Toon Schut and 369 Ben Atkinson came to blows early on while 568 Shaun Login span Legg which triggered the first pile-up of the race on the home straight with Dakin, Tomblin, John Cayzer and 623 Rob Dobie involved. Start eased past Wiles for the lead as Lowe span 366 Mick Kemp and they crashed into the back of the pile-up. Hiddinga sent Gordon Ferguson around as Simpson battled to third as Robertson overtook Wiles for the lead. Start then crashed into the stricken cars on the exit of turn four which also claimed 345 Gary Taylor and Start, Taylor recovering only to be spun by Schut on the exit of turn two which triggered another blockage and this time the cars spread all the way across the track. The reds being ordered just as sufficient cars broke away safely but with the race inside the final five the result was declared in favour of Robertson from Simpson and Atkinson.

35 of the 36 qualifiers assembled for the final with Login the first to show as he span 609 Brandon Davies while Wycherly and Simpson tangled and hit the concrete blocks. Brandon recovered to spin 68 Dave Brennan and he was clobbered by 145 Graham Mole and 377 Daz Saw, the reds then shown for the stricken Brennan and a complete restart was ordered. This began with Shaw running into the spun Hawinkels as Derek Cayzer led the field as the lone white grade qualifier. A pile-up now formed on the back straight just exiting turn two but with sufficient room on the inside the race continued with Stu Cayzer relieving Derek Cayzer of the top spot with Dorrill, Pilkinton and Turiccki next. The latter quickly moved up to third as Cooper had de Groot around. Stu Cayzer led the cars to half race by which point Palmer had stormed to second before 519 Stephen Lawrence removed Hiddinga. Meanwhile a loose wheel speared among the stricken cars on the back straight which resulted in the reds being shown and with the race in the final five laps, Stu Cayzer was declared the winner ahead of Palmer and Turiccki.

Heat one: 498 Derek Cayzer, 379, 606, 662, 259, 597, H19, 259, 515, 431, H24
Heat two: 588 Matt Pettit, 925, 744, 186, 145, 150, 728, 905, 52, 568
Heat three: 924 Martyn Pearson, 798, 702, 449, 68, 377, H259, 392, H646, 519
Consolation: 52 Pete Robertson, 871, 369, 609, 433, 631, 274, 742, 466, 568
Grand Final: 379 Stu Cayzer, 606, 186, 798, 259, 392, 744, 702, 449, 871

Some tremendous racing on track from all three formulas but the sheer weight of the meeting took its toll and resulted in the unfortunate cancellation of the last 2Litre Banger race which was a disappointing end to the night. The formula could take some consolation in having served up a contender for race and hit of the year while both stockcar classes delivered some fantastic full contact action throughout the night.
