The first staging of the unlimited banger East Anglian team championship attracted a fine field of 97 cars on May 22 spread across 27 teams with 19 of them having a full quota of four drivers. The remainder were all one man short save the Grave Diggers who only fielded two and the Midnight Runner B team which as a 11th hour addition had just one representative. As you can see from the above mental metal there was some superb machinery on hand as well as plenty of smartly presented cars. For many the double figure of big Japs stood out and certainly the late Cima of 730 Deano and BK333 Danny Webb’s highly rare Cedric coupe were head turners. Meanwhile Team Black and the Runners impressed with their array of Japs while the WI Engineering teams were equally impressive with their vintage line up. Elsewhere and the Volvo was the most popular car in the pits (all cars are Volvos unless otherwise stated, there was 23 Granadas including nine fresh Mk2s and nine XJs including a series five for FB128 Andy Shipp. Completing the field were Omegas for TT54 Martin Lawton, TT200 Wayne Holton, BT425 Martin Stopher and DV898 Andy Battle. Special mention should also go to the Bad News teams who raced in the black and red colours of former team mate Andy Nicholls who died a year ago.

Heat one was open to the eight teams in group A and they raised 29 cars although things started fairly quietly. The early laps saw 266 Odd Job bury FA381 Craig Upson (Mk2 Granada) as Deano span BT303 Wayne Linsdale into the blocks before BT437 Chris Bailey (Mk2 Granada) attacked 239 Nemesis only to come under fire from 200 Skippy. TT508 Harry Bradbury (Mk5 Granada) meanwhile homed in for a good shot on Nemesis as 384 Goldie laid into DI349 Michael Allard (Mk2 Granada). Deano then powered into BA277 Des Owen (XJ) and stuffed him head-on into FA439 Danny Sutton (240 estate). 508 Led Head spotted the spun 209 Minge on the road bend and connected with a wicked head-on as Goldie attacked 425 Mr Vauxhall. MA05 Carlos Perez attacked Goldie and dumped him into the lurking 190 Pikey, the latter battling back to meet Skippy in a savage head-on which saw the action pick up for the final laps. Deano blasted Skippy only to take one from BA291 Jay Giddings (Mk2 Granada) in turn to trigger a pit bend blockage. 54 Splat scored on the latter but was nailed by Linsdale in as DI247 Lee Clarke (240 estate) met Pikey in a head-on. The race again turned quiet for a couple laps until Deano reeled in RD334 Stephen Court (740 estate) and buried Splat. Perez meanwhile went for an all or nothing last bend lunge on DI85 James Ellis (Mk2 Granada) but the latter managed to squeeze through the gap in the pile-up for the win with BA21 Jason Colbert (Mk2 Granada) nailing the Runner to end the action. Perez still took second with Deano third, Colbert and Goldie the only other finishers with Led Head named the best entertainer.

Groups B and C contested heat two with nine teams for this one and up to 31 cars. Things started badly for 587 Humps who span into the concrete as 33! the Legend opened his account with a hit on YN67 Rickie Beasley (240 estate). PR934 Stu Green (740 estate) fenced 262 the Verger as 320 Porky caught the spinning DV259 Dan Poole (Mk2 Granada) in the door. 62 Axle treated BB192 Terry Nightingale (Mk2 Granada) to a head-on while CL81 Lee Greenwood (240 estate) took time from his lead to run in WY101 Richard Rayner which allowed DV113 Steve Sedgwick (240 estate) to T-bone the P4 in turn. Rayner battled back to meet 128 Shippy on the nose but this left him open for a big portion of Daimler from the Legend. 934 Greeny further wrecked Rayner when he buried the Verger into his team mate as 220 Philo connected on 313 Cully and Axle blasted Sedgwick. MF555 Sam Gelsthorpe used his Icebreaker Fleetwood to hit YN362 Liam Friel (240 estate) on the nose while Greeny and Sedgwick met in similar fashion, the Predator then going head to head with 362 Tilly. Axle meanwhile delivered a hard hit to CL20 Andy Burbridge (240) as Philo pounded Greeny before FB237 Gary Nash (240 estate) stuffed 17 the Little Chief into the pit bend wreckage. Philo then turned round and blasted the luckless Little Chief and stuffed him into Rayner with the Verger homing in for a head-on to Philo only to take one in turn from EA265 Stewart Foster (240 estate). Meanwhile at the end of the back straight 67 Sonny Black spotted the on opposite Greeny and delivered a flat out head-on, Tilly then blasting the latter a split second later as CL34 Paul Beavis (XJ) nailed Sonny Black. The reds then came out to assist a shaken Greeny with 81 Numbnuts declared the win from Sonny Black and 34 Beaver, Philo taking the entertainer award this time.

The final heat of fresh cars saw group D contest heat three and again nine teams took to the track, raising 33 cars between them and they produced the best heat thus far. A messy start saw 520 the Undertaker fail to get running and he was buried by 714 No Show which also claimed CH278 Tom Hills (Mk2 Granada) and the latter was slaughtered by a stunning hit from 503 Odd Job.GD114 Adam Jackson (740 estate) blasted the Rover in turn with the hits pouring in on turn four as CW518 Vic Bilky Jnr (240) nailing Jackson with a head-on. TM119 Davey Cox (240 estate) added to 278 Sex Pest’s woes with a head-on as GR682 Paul Sparrow (Mk2 Granada) stuffed TM348 Sonny Sherwood (Mk5 Granada) with a near track blockage now forming in turn three. This allowed EB275 Joe Morgan (240 estate) to nail MT320 Paul Seymour (Mk2 Granada) before CH224 Dave Canham (Mk3 Granada estate) stuffed BL617 Jack Overy into MT104 Mick Siddalls; XJ. CW101 Garry Deacon (Mk5 Granada) stuffed TM22 Dave Vincent (Mk2 Granada) into 518 Bilko Jnr which set the latter up for a stiff head-on from 119 Cruncher. 503 Odd Job now hammered Overy as Jackson fired into 528 the Professor and added him to the heap which now left turn three completely blocked. GR370 John Cobbold (XJ40) nailed the luckless Siddalls as Sparrow scored on Canham and Overy recovered to blast Jackson before BL920 James Medley turned round and scored on Bilko Jnr. GR159 Darren Scarrow (240 estate) and 348 Mushy went head to head as Overy delivered a revenge hit on Canham. EB252 Steve Bugler (240) picked up 488 United and thundered him into CW205 Kieran Briddock (Mk5 Granada) a treat as Cruncher stuffed Overy into the wreckage. EB148 Ian Redden (240 estate) T-boned Cobbold and 311 Helm did the same to Overy as EB474 Matt Threlkeld (240 estate) and Medley enjoyed a head-on. Cruncher turned round to attack Helm as Medley hit 148 Shorty over the rear wheel. Overy bounced back to hit Jackson head-on with Cobbold blasting the latter in turn as Helm held up Mushy which allowed 97 Alge to blast the latter. With precious few left the final laps were tame until Cobbold delivered a fine shot on the struggling Professor on the pit bend. Alge meanwhile threw his Cedric round in superb style to the win from TM67 Sparky and Cruncher and with Mushy the only other finisher Team 22 took the early lead from the Clangers and Midnight Runners A. 503 Odd Job was the best entertainer this time.

Groups A and B returned for the fourth heat and between them raised a 32 car field for a another belting heat. 381 Shrug set the wheels in motion as he fenced the smart Volvo 240 of BA91 Eric Newson and a pile-up quickly started to form by the pit gate. DI525 Wes Starmer (240) was quickly on opposite to attack Deano as CL101 Ian Norris (Mk3 Granada estate) T-boned 247 Bro. Bailey connected on Allard and Gelsthorpe blasted CL101 Bam Bam. FA61 Karl Totham (Mk2 Granada) scored on Minge as FA439 Danny Sutton (240 estate) ran in RD174 Curtis Rathbone (740 estate) hard. Axle spotted the spun Perez and delivered a savage head-on by the pit gate, Deano delivering revenge with a hit on the west country man but this allowed 265 Disco Stu to deliver another head-on to Perez. 20 Baldy meanwhile wrecked Baily as the Verger laid into Numbnuts in the middle of the start line blockage. Humps buried 91 the Joker and 61 Flash scored on EA862 Jonny James’ 240 estate. Allard attacked Perez as Ellis weighed in on Numbnuts and Gelsthorpe hammered Allard to leave the track completely blocked. 862 Drifter now found Pikey and delivered a T-bone as Shrug nailed Minge and Wes hit the Legend on the nose. Gelsthorpe and BK807 Chris Murfin (XJ) met in similar fashion as the Little Chief turned round and blasted Drifter hard. Minge and Gelsthorpe enjoyed a stiff head-on with the Little Chief blasting the former in turn as Axle turned round to nail Pikey with Bro also laying into the latter. Wes continued against the flow to hit 611 the Younger Postman as Nemsis found the infield blocks and took a cracking hit from Allard. 807 Murf now blasted the Verger only to take one in turn from 439 Sutty. Pikey bounced back to score on Bro with Wes hitting the former in turn only to take one himself from Nemesis. Pikey again pounded Bro as Murf blasted Wes only to take a package from the Younger Postman. The leading Numbnuts was again stuck in the heap and took hard hit from Nemesis and Murf as the Little Chief blasted the Younger Postman only to take one himself from Beaver with Wes nailing the latter in turn. Beaver battled on and on the next lap he stuffed the Little Chief into the pile which left him open to a hit from 382 Chubby. Murf again scored on Wes as Bro landed one final shot on Pikey. Numbnuts meanwhile came through for his second win, Murf the only other recorded finisher with the Little Chief taking the entertainer award.

Groups C and D competed in the final heat and mustered 28 cars between them. Things began with DV188 John Reeves (XJ40) hitting the spun GR159 Darren Scarrow (240 estate) on the nose as Battle fenced 503 Odd Job. PR401 Psycho used his late Yank to bury Shippy as 474 Matty fenced Cruncher before Cobbold T-boned 259 Big Dan. Psycho continued with a shot on Matty as Cruncher delivered a hard hit on PR176 Ady Gibbs (740) at the end of the home straight. The Undertake hit the lurking Psycho but he shrugged it off to deliver a big hit on the passing GR86 Alec Savage (Mk5 Granada) with MT179 Shaun Rushton (XJ) hitting the former in turn. In the race Vincent span EB275 Joe Morgan (240 estate) for the lead as Cruncher continued to feud with Matty and they met on the nose. 275 Rusty stuffed 237 Nasha into the wreckage on the pit bend which allowed Sparky to blast the former as Scarrow scored on Sedgwick. Matty and Cruncher enjoyed another head-on as Scarrow span Rusty into the blocks. Nasha meanwhile gave Sparrow a shot and 188 Victor followed Shippy in nicely. Siddals blasted the luckless Sparrow as 179 Cool nailed Victor and Rusty recovered to hit Cruncher over the front wheel. FB388 Emmerson Fairweather (Mk2 Granada) hit MT320 Smiler head-on, 252 Boogie delivering the final action in style with a big hit on Cruncher on opposite. Vincent meanwhile raced to the win and with team mates Sparky and Mushy next the went into the final with a commanding lead. Psycho took the entertainer prize.

With a four way tie for eighth, 11 teams qualified for the final but only eight of them were represented and together they raised 21 cars. A special mention to the Clangers who raised all four cars having competed in both their heats (Team Black Over 30s also had all four but failed to race in their second heat). As expected it was a more subdued affair but Allard continued to shine as he nailed the spun Perez on the nose before Pikey turned round to attack Cobbold before he wrecked Allard with a pair of hits. Sparrow fenced Webb only to be blasted in turn by Chubby as up front Vincent and Alge were having a great battle for the lead. Baldy treated the lurking Pikey to a head-on while the Little Chief attacked Beaver. BL998 Wayne Cotterill Jnr (XJ) then turned round and stopped the leading Vincent with a brutal head-on as Chubby blasted Baldy hard. Cobbold then attacked Beaver, getting him sideways and Pikey connected with a fierce T-bone to the Clanger, Chubby then blasting the Kent man again. Medley rammed Vincent as Bam Bam delivered Clanger revenge with a hard hit on Pikey. Alge took his second win and celebrated with a shot on Bam Bam. Second and third for Mushy and Sparky sealed a comfortable win for Team 22 while Alge’s win took second for Team Black Over 30s. Team Green and Team Black OAPs finished on 29 points but with BK312 Tom Reynolds (740 estate) having the highest position in the final, the latter team took the final piece of silverware.

With the curfew closing in the gate was held as long as possible for the Accumulator qualifier and ultimately 25 made the track but some missed out. Heartbreak for Sex Pest who having worked wonders to repair expired at the start with Rayner, who had also done wonders to fix, burying United to get things going. This allowed Bilko Jnr to blast the latter with a big head-on which in turn buried Rayner and 266 Odd Job with Shippy weighing in hard on the PRI young gun in turn. Matty nailed Shippy in turn as the pit bend pile-up grew once again with Axle trashed Shrug with a fine hit 312 Turbo turned round and gave Psycho a massive hit which saw the latter T-bone Axle in turn as Disco Stu blasted 439 Sutty with a T-bone. Shorty now blasted Tilly as 998 Cotty hammered 266 Odd Job, Shorty meanwhile continued to hound Tilly and stuffed him into Psycho. Cotty then picked up Boogie and buried him into Shorty which also claimed the Younger Postman with Rusty blasting the Team Black man in turn. Scarrow continued the hits with a shot on Rusty as Shorty and Turbo went head to head. Rayner T-boned Matty and Boogie hit Turbo and Cotty connected on the Younger Postman only to take a shot in turn from Shorty with Rusty delivering a head-on to Cotty. Concern was then shown as Turbo had lost his crash helmet and despite having an opportunity to exit safely he instead carried on leaving no other option but for the reds to be shown, matters made worse when Matty blasted Turbo long after the reds. Fortunately everyone was ok and the race was declared in favour of Boogie and we resumed with the DD. Rayner was the first to show T-boning Shorty as Matty (who had been disqualified for the aforementioned hit on Turbo) blasted Shippy and Scarrow scored on Axle. Disco Stu and Axle then silenced Rayner with a pair of hits as Shippy and Boogie went head to head as did Matty and the Younger Postman. Scarrow took a wild lunge at Shorty but missed and collected a dead car which allowed the latter to deliver two revenge T-bones. Matty meanwhile connected with a T-bone and head-on to Chubby, the latter battling on to attack Shorty before they met head-on finishing them both. This left just Boogie, Shippy and Axle who traded numerous blows but were restricted by the wreckage on track and the state of their cars and ultimately a three way tie was declared with Shorty taking the entertainer award this time.

Round three of the BriSCA F2 Stockcar track championship was also the first World of Shale qualifier of the season at Mildenhall and it raised a quite superb field of 53 cars including welcome overseas entry H3 Danny van Wamalen.

24 cars for the first heat with the hot conditions making for some unexpected and tricky conditions, the road bend being wetter than hoped for while the pit bend became a dust bowl making visibility very difficult. This caused an immediate pile-up on turn three with 744 Tom Smart, 366 Mick Kemp, 379 Stuart Cayzer and 288 Stuart Whetstone among the casualties before 917 Nigel Wiles went round and was struck by 284 Jody Griffin. 466 Jamie Start made the early running as 433 Steve Lilley hit the fence and 345 Gary Taylor also suffered a spin, 589 Colin Eardley then going round and being hit by Wiles. Start continued to lead the way, 259 Simon Farrington the first yellow to show in third and 145 Graham Mole up to fifth from the blues. Another pile-up formed on turn three as Smart and Kemp crashed out and were this time joined by Taylor as Farrington raced into second while Start sent the back marking Wiles around. On lap nine Farrington made his move and grabbed the lead, ruthlessly firing the back mark Kemp wide en route to the win while Start spun by Lilley in the race for second, Eardley completing a yellow grade 1-2-3. 369 Ben Atkinson finished fifth from the reds and was the only non white or yellow grade driver among the top 10.

With a few late arrivals failing to compete in the heats, 26 cars contested heat two with 488 Liam Benton an early spinner as 376 Darren Seneschall, 469 Ian Chalkley, 392 Mark Short and 728 Carl Pilkinton all crashed out in a heap leaving 645 James Waters to make the running. 871 Mark Simpson gave 606 Andy Palmer a big hit as the star men battled for early position while 925 Paul Wilson was another to suffer a spin. 495 John Cayzer took the lead as Waters went round and was hit by the luckless Seneschall, 597 Barry Clow and 186 George Turiccki. Palmer’s chances ended when he was spun by 52 Pete Richardson as 702 Allan Cooper was also forced out when a lose wheel guard resulted in an automatic disqualification. Chalkey had Clow around as Pilkinton span into the concrete blocks. Cayzer then crashed out handing 925 Paul Wilson the lead but he expired on the road bend handing 401 Barry Goldin the lead and he took the flag, the only red top in the top 10 again, 496 Steve Dakin and 260 Anthony Winters his nearest rivals.

Plenty of big names among the 29 cars for the consolation with an early sort out seeing Seneschall fire into 129 Bill Bignell which in turn sent John Cayzer into the wall as 335 Danny Cassar and 515 Lee Veall both suffered spins. 450 Ben Goddard made the early running this time as the spun Seneschall was hit by 595 Jamie Young and Taylor had 607 Paul Barrett around. Meanwhile another pile-up formed on the road bend which claimed van Wamalen, 588 Matt Pettit, Turiccki, Whetstone and Benton before 342 Ross Taylor went round and was hit by Barrett and Gary Taylor. Goddard still led but Palmer was already into fourth as 568 Shaun Login fired Pettit into the fence on the pit bend before the leading Goddard lost a chunk of hit lead when he came under fire from Whetstone which put him and Clow into the wall on the back straight, Goddard then spun from contention which handed Palmer the lead and he motored to his third Mildenhall win of the season, Cooper getting the better of Mole in an excellent scrap for second.

All 32 qualifiers assembled for the final and as expected it was an action packed affair. 922 Graham Legg was the first to show with a hit on Start as Eardly fenced Lilley and Robertson had 291 Craig Tomblin around and he was hit by the pack. Start survived the attack from Legg and he led from the latter with Wiles and Waters next to as Farrington spun but more importantly a pit bend pile-up formed claiming Winters, 449 Mark Dorrill, Lilley and later on Tomblin. Eardley had worked to fourth but with Tomblin unable to get running the reds came out on lap three and a complete restart was ordered. Down to 28 for the restart but it was even shorter lived as a wild start saw Palmer spun Turiccki before all hell broke lose on the home straight. Winters span Dakin which causing a pile-up claimed Dakin, Kemp, Pettit and later 274 Trevor Bonnett and Login. With the blockage half way across the straight and several bumpers locked together as well as Login losing a wheel the reds were again shown and another complete restart ordered. 24 survivors lined for the third attempt with Legg setting the pace this time from Waters as Wiles span into the infield blocks. Eardley removed 498 Derek Cayzer and Smart’s hopes ended with a spun. Up front and Waters took the lead but a hit from Legg meant he swiftly returned to the front. 150 Mark Tombs was up to fourth while Turiccki was a high profile retirement. Start was holding third while Mole was the first blue to feature, climbing to sixth. Tombs fired into Start to take third by lap seven as Simpson fired Farrington wide to charge into fourth. It was lap nine when Tombs grabbed the lead and at half way Legg held second from Simpson, Start, Short, Winters, 379 Stu Cayzer and Palmer. Start was another to fall victim of a wheel guard coming adrift and he was disqualified. Simpson reeled in Legg but the white grade driver refused to budge and gave a great fight, holding second until three to go when Simpson finally got past by which point Tombs had broken away. Goldin had now also charged up to fourth and was closing in on the podium places as Tombs took the win from Simpson and Legg held off Goldin for a superb third.

Despite only having the banger final for repairs another 32 car field gathered for the Grand National. Stu Cayzer fired the first shot with a hit on Seneschall as Goddard took the early lead while the spun Young was hit by Dakin. Waters took over up front as Derek Cayzer was another to spin in the pit bend before Robertson and Veall tangled. The lead changed hands again as Goddard again took over while Waters span Whetstone and dropped down the order. Goldin squeezed Eardley into the home straight fence and got onto two wheels in the process as all hell broke out again, this time on the pit bend. The trigger was Goddard tangling with Dakin and they crashed out handing the lead to John Cayzer. Meanwhile Mole and Waters were the first to run into the stricken Goddard and Dakin and they were followed by several more with the blockage filling the outside 2/3rds of the track. The race battled on as the carnage spread onto the back straight but the majority were able to get running or get out of harm’s way, Tomblin adding to the chaos as he spun and was hit by Tombs but again they soon moved leaving John Cayzer to win by a country mile from Palmer and Cooper with Tombs taking seventh from the one lap handicap in a stunning race.

Heat one: 259 Simon Farrington, 433, 589, 150, 369, 498, 466, 274, 366, 917
Heat two: 401 Barry Goldin, 496, 260, 37, 392, 449, 469, 52, 922, 645
Consolation: 606 Andy Palmer, 702, 145, 871, 662, 744, 291, 379, 186, 568, 742, 728
Grand Final: 150 Mark Tombs, 871, 922, 401, 392, 379, 702, 606, 145, 589
Grand National: 495 John Cayzer, 606, 702, 392, 742, 379, 150, 186, 922, 445

An action packed night of racing with both formulas in fine form. The unlimited banger team championship proved to be an excellent addition to the RDC fixtures and with a few tweaks in the future it could become one of the highlights of the season at Mildenhall, as it was a combination of rated tin, some rated hits and cool RWD driving made it a cracking night. Not to be outdone the F2 Stockcars continued their fabulous season at Mildenhall with some great racing throughout, the only downside being the unexpected dusty conditions which spoiled heat one.
