RDC's Another Wild Night
National Bangers BBA British Championship and Reliant Robins World Final

The 2010 staging of the National Banger British Championship attracted a bumper field of 112 cars on August 14, the meeting somehow avoiding the heavy rain of the previous days and the afternoon even though wet weather was forecast. Visitors came from far and wide with every ORC promotions save GMP and Nutts Corner represented in the main event plus several guests in the support race while many of the sports big teams were represented including the warring Team Black and Condoms. On the car front it was a completely FWD based entry save a used Omega for 538 Jake Swan, the pick of the cars being the fresh and smart Cougars of Blooz Boy pairing 154 Mike Plant and 200 Steve Farrell while 516 Carl Gould had a used one.

With delays getting cars through scrutineering, just over 30 cars gathered for the first last chance heat which was a few minutes late in getting underway but started with 768 Danny McSweeney burying 711 Luke Wesson as 788 Dan Burton ran head-on into 384 John Golden before 539 Danny Allen got a hammering, first T-boned by 101 Richard Rayner and then hammered by 538 Swanny Jnr and 26 Dan Holmes (Cavalier) as Rayner stuffed 511 Helen Lincquorice into some dead cars. 88 Ash Burton found the back straight post as 15 Lee Weeks followed in 57 Stu Cumming well on the pit bend. 514 Chas Taylor buried welcome returnee 82 Wayne Quinn and 59 Ben Jackson stuffed 711 Streaky which set the latter up for a head-on from Rayner with 690 Jack Wilkins hitting the latter in turn. The recovered 57 Dino was run in again, this time by 688 Steve Collins before 513 Lewis Harvey fired into McSweeney and fenced him to boot with 690 Del Boy stepping in to fence the Gladiator as 514 Chas Taylor blasted 304 Lee Proctor. The race turned quiet for the final five laps until 164 Barry Sedgwick stuffed Weeks into some dead cars and 312 Tom Reynolds span 180 Mark Foster into the wall. 64 Barry Lee (Vectra) raced to the win with Jackson and 8 Dale Woolnough next home.

With several drivers failing to make it out for a heat, it was another 31 car field for the second last chance race which started with a bang as a big first bend push saw 200 Wayne Holton follow-in 145 Chris Abbott who hit the pit gate, snapping his Mondeo well. 604 Ross Cooper blasted the former in turn as a massive pile-up formed by the pit gate with 79 James Knight nailing the Aftermath man only to take one in turn from 2 Luke Dawson. 783 David Hogg picked out the spun 433 Ben Smith for a head-on and 12 Paul Dean met 757 Nathan Large (Cavalier) in similar fashion. 78 Lee Macey buried 465 Andy Scarlett while 790 Nathan Young buried 60 Kyle Stevenson into the growing heap while 603 Jon Cooper blasted 465 Nine Inch on the nose, 78 Mad Mace then stuffing 12 Flex through the passenger doors of Nine Inch in a big hit. 50 Simon West then picked up 862 Liam Reach and followed him head-on into 808 Jay Buckland as 340 Wes Freestone met 136 Adrian Court on the nose. 328 Daniel Lathan used his immaculate looking Mondeo estate to nail welcome Mendips visitor 4 Bob Barnes on the nose as 313 Craig Osbourn delivered a fine hit on 79 Naughty Boy. 100 Callum White gave Osbourn a wicked hit in turn, the former fleeing the scene to allow Ross Cooper to also blast Osborn. 338 Terry Garrod then tagged 174 Dave Osbourn over the rear wheel and took one in turn from 123 Rob Smith with Lathan hitting him in turn. 41 Kevin Freestone hit the luckless 174 Whipper on the nose as Hogg blasted Naughty Boy to trigger another train of hits on the home straight. 338 Wingnut hit the former in turn before 123 the Traveller, Lathan, Flex, Mad Mace, 790 Naff, Buckland and 2 Spooky all homing in one after the other. 100 Captain Cock picked up and followed in Naff a treat as 525 Wes Starmer stuffed 124 John Chaplin (Rover) into some dead cars as 603 the Younger Hitman connected with a T-bone on Buckland. The race then quiet for the final couple of laps saw Lathan burying 525 Wes with the latter ramming him in revenge and the Younger Hitman won a cracking race for the final championship space ahead of the Traveller and Mad Mace.

A full field of 44 cars gathered for the British Championship although it was reduced to 43 when 577 Alfie Lee broke down on the starting grid. The latter was one of the nights smart car awards, 107 Michael Seex, 442 Sean Crittenden, 382 Jack Foster Jnr, 86 Alec Savage (Cavalier), 807 Chris Murfin and 682 Paul Sparrow also excelling in the paint department. An Incarace draw determined the grid which left 566 Tony Pallett (Cavalier) and 107 Seexy on the front row, Incarace pairing 362 Matt Godden and 170 Darren Teal behind and 264 Mark Welland and 516 Gouldy on row three. Godden was the first to show removing Teal but he survived to hang onto third as 566 Zippy Jnr set the pace from Seexy while Godden continued by fencing 264 Wellard and 158 Shane Davies did the same to Savage and 425 Martin Stopher (Vectra) removed 442 Critter. The Younger Hitman fired into and spun 549 Phil Smith as 425 Mr Vauxhall blasted 15 Ben Tovey hard on the road bend while Savage and Wellard span. Zippy Jnr still led from Seexy, Teal, 617 Jack Overy, Gouldy and 20 Andy Burbridge (Primera estate). 807 Murf removed 204 Charlie King with 998 Wayne Cotterill Jnr coming off the middle to ram the latter, a move he repeated to earn a black flag and load up. Overy now moved to third and then second before he battled Davies on the road bend, the latter then coming round to meet 998 Cotty Jnr in a rated head-on. 673 Darren Fendley worked his way to fifth and removed Seexy to continue his progress with 119 Davey Cox (Vectra) now up to fourth. Overy then turned round and blasted Davies as 349 Michael Allard picked up and ran in 331 Jason Jackson with Godden offering an assist. The race hit half way with Zippy Jnr still out front from 119 Cruncher, Gouldy and Fendley. Overy again hit Davies, this time with a head-on, 370 John Cobbold then hitting the Condom as a result before Allard again followed in 331 Boxer by the pit gate which rolled the latter on impact. The hit sent the Runner into a roll but 30 Roy Laybourn Jnr was already committed and hit him as he was on his way over, 60 Steve Laybourn then also hitting the upturned Runner in a very wreckless hit which saw him loaded as well with the reds coming out to allow Boxer a safe exit. Zippy Jnr headed the restart from Cruncher, Gouldy, 791 Spud, 20 Baldy, 208 Jimmy Randall and Fendley next in line, the race restarting just after the half way mark. The race resumed with 208 the Finger quickly overhauling Baldy as Murf laid into and span 363 Sam Trim. The top three remained the same with five to run with Fendley now up to fourth as 61 Darryl Theedom attacked Savage before the Finger hooked out Spud. Zippy Jnr meanwhile raced to the flag from Gouldy and Fendley, the race ending in controversial fashion as 30 Golden Boy came inside out at the Finger on the rundown lap and hit him in the drivers door to become the latest to be loaded. Sadly the controversy wasn’t finished as Zippy Jnr and Gouldy failed post race tyre checks and were disqualified meaning Fendley took the his maiden major championship from the Finger, Baldy and Spud, the rest of the top 10 filled by Cobbold, Murf, 64 Barry the Bull, 452 Anthony Sleeman, Sparrow and 303 Wayne Linsdale.

38 cars gathered for the first Allcomers which kicked off with 200 Noon using his Cougar to bury Naughty Boy as the traffic sent 262 Kevin Lee hurtling into the wall and a pile-up formed on the back straight. 154 Willis went head to head with 101 Bam Bam as the lively Godden fenced Noon. 209 Ben Hayward then followed in Jackson as 690 Del Boy blasted Woolnough which in turn stuffed Mad Mace on the home straight before the reds came out for Naughty Boy who had taken a series of hits while exiting on the pit bend. The race resumed with 209 Minge getting turned into the concrete blocks as 74 Matt Hill blasted Barnes and Flex connected with a meaty T-bone to Del Boy just past the start line. Osbourn laid into the luckless Barnes as Godden weighed in with a cracking hit on Wes on the pit bend. The reds then came out for Del Boy who was in trouble on the home straight and this sadly led to a lengthy delay to help him from the car which resulted in the event being declared with only a handful of laps declared, 188 John Reeves taking the win from 162 Rob Wheatley and Osbourne.

The meeting continued with just shy of 50 gathering for the second Allcomers which was a manic affair. 41 Dibble began by fencing 11 Graeme Shilling and then blasting Sedgwick as 367 Tom Keep followed in 136 Adrian Court a treat. 60 Shakey Jnr turned round to assault Whipper with a couple of hits as 452 Lurch stuffed Sparrow and 423 Danny Oliver took shots from 82 Quinny and Sparrow. 837 Martin Wesby blasting the latter in turn. Spooky weighed in with a T-bone on 312 Tom Reynolds but was duly nailed by Murf as Overy scored over the rear wheel of 204 Charlie Boy. Murf then picked up and followed in Captain Cock a treat but he earned a load up with he T-boned Spooky on the road bend with a hit which was deemed too close to the wall. Murf continued with hits on Charlie Boy and Dino as Overy homed in for a big hit on Whipper, Buckland then T-boning Dino. Osbourn then blasted 340 Wes Freestone only to take one from Fendley as Quinny marked his return with a win from Fendley and the Finger.

With the curfew looming the gate was held as long as possible for the Accumulator qualifier and 36 made it out with Phil Smith setting the ball rolling as he span McSweeny into the blocks while Taylor buried Sedgwick, Osbourn blasting the latter in turn. Captain Cock delivered a big hit on McSweeny as 26 Hacker followed 439 Sutty in hard. Noon then picked up 50 Munch and thundered him head-on into Barnes as Reach did a complete roll on the home straight, landing on his wheels to take a shot from 88 Ace Ash. Oliver then stuffed Hacker as Taylor laid into Flex as 382 Chubby raced to the win from Quinny and Sparrow. Into the demo with Taylor burying Captain Cock, the latter recovering to be buried by Boxer before the action tailed off. Things improved when Overy laid into Oliver as Weeks blasted Licquorice with Hacket turning round to hit the former head-on as Hill dumped Overy into the dead cars on the start line. Captain Cock fenced Quinny with Ben Smith blasting the former in turn. Oliver hammered Nine Inch and Chubby hit Hill over the front wheel. The event again turned quiet until Noon impressed with hits on Jackson and Hill before Chubby stuffed 136 Junior into the home straight wreckage, the reds then coming out to aid a driver in trouble in the middle of the pile. The race soon restarted with the Finger attacking Noon which allowed Nine Inch to deliver a big T-bone on the Blooz Boy. 180 Sparky followed Captain Cock in a treat as 688 Steve Collins turned round to attack Phil Smith, Sutty then coming under from Chubby and Boxer, the latter turning round to nail Nine Inch, the latter taking further abuse from Noon and Oliver. Wes then dished out a big hit on Taylor but took one in turn from Chubby, Wes rounding things off with shots on Nine Inch and Oliver before the reds came out for Taylor. Sadly with Taylor needing medical assistance and the curfew reached the event was abandoned at this point with Noon and Boxer Jack taking entertainer awards.

A superb field of 33 Reliant Robins gathered for their 2010 World Final although only 23 were qualifiers for the main event. A cosmopolitan entry to say the least, 78 Mark Bowskill and 87 Barry Richard from Mendips, 136 Nicky Simpson and 40 Roger Nelson from the north, the latter marking his first outing in several years as a surprise 40th birthday treat. Meanwhile joining 186 George Turiccki was fellow BriSCA F2 Stockcar star 702 Allen Cooper while the standard of presentation made by several was most impressive, the pick being 66 Steve Willis.

All 23 qualifiers contested the World Final with defending champion 553 Daniel Douglas on pole but he was a little slow getting away which allowed 66 Pork Pie to take the top spot as 29 Steve Donavan and 554 Chalkie Douglas both getting onto two wheels as 197 Tom Tatham removed 854 Carl Pickworth and 185 Ben Oliver span before Donavan’s bad start continued with a roll. 87 Barry Richards moved himself to second as 576 Colin Aldred attacked 85 James Ellis and the recovered 185 Killer got himself onto two wheels. The caution flags then came out for the first time when 96 Ian Robins and the luckless Donavan rolled. The race resumed with Pork Pie leading Richards and Douglas as 103 Paul Fairman tipped onto two wheels before 197 Tommy Boy sent 28 David Donavan into a 1 ½ roll to bring the yellows out again. The race resumed with 195 Pete Bowley attacking and fencing Turiccki as 117 Karl Dack attacked the recovered David Donavan before Bowley hit Bowskill hard. Meanwhile Richards took the lead but Pork Pie swiftly span him and rolled him to reclaim the lead to bring the yellows out just as Fairman span 16 Ray Layton and rolled himself in the process. The next restart was also short lived as Bowley rolled Robins and 117 Kamikaze also went over to bring the yellows back out. Douglas had taken over by now but the yellows remained out as Kamikaze’s car caught fire on the back straight. Pork Pie battled back into the lead while Douglas lost time battling with David Donavan which allowed 552 Karl Douglas to move into second as 485 Gary Archer and Fairman both performed full rolls. Pork Pie raced to his second World title, 552 Blacknuts beating Douglas and 576 Porkey in a close finish for the podium spots.

The Grand Prix was opened to all and raised a field of 28 cars with Fairman an early spinner as Tommy Boy attacked Pickworth before a big road bend pile-up left Killer and Pickworth upturned and being inside the first lap the reds came out and a complete restart was ordered. Cooper led the restart as 285 Sean Dyer span Turiccki as 851 Adam Storr rolled Tommy Boy and then did the same to Fairman as 54 Shaun Douglas sent team mate 275 Phil Rowbottom over, Porkey also rolling to bring the yellows out. 30 James Donavan span into the concrete on the restart as Layton did a full roll and 800 Craig Bolton fell over to bring the yellows out again. A big crash on the restart saw Shaun Douglas roll Layton and send himself over the process while James Donavan and Rowbottom also went over to bring the yellows out again. Richards span Fairman when the race restarted as Bolton fenced Pork Pie before Robins rolled onto his side and with the race in the final three laps, the race was declared in favour of Cooper from Richards and Ellis

Down to 21 for the Allcomers which was again plagued with caution flags. The first came when Blacknuts rolled James Donavan onto his roof, the race resuming with Layton tipping Storr onto two wheels as 385 Roy Gedge earned a black flag when followed in David Donavan on the road bend and rolled himself in the process to bring the yellows out. The restart was short lived when Cooper rolled Layton, the race resuming until Killer fell over to bring the yellows out again. Pork Pie then fenced Storr as an unidentified car rolled on the road bend and with the race in the final stages it was declared in favour of Richards from Nelson and 709 Ben Hollis.

World Final: 66 Steve Willis, 552, 553, 576, 87, 275, 554, 103, 04, 485
Grand Prix: 702 Allan Cooper, 87, 85, 709, 186, 66, 16, 553, 761, 197
Allcomers: 87 Barry Richards, 40, 709, 761, 552, 85, 702, 16, 66

A night of great racing at times but an evening which was marred by numerous problems both on track and behind the scenes, including a delay to the start, controversial hits, controversy over the result of one of the championships and driver injuries which overcast an otherwise action packed meeting.
