The 15th annual pre 70 banger meeting once again attracted a monster field with 127 cars filling the Mildenhall pits with visitors from far and wide including a large presence of the Mob from north of the border plus a decent sized entry from Mendips and two of the Woodlands outfit from CAMSO. Car wise and the level of rated machinery was exceptional with numerous head turners among the field, the pick arguably the Taunus of 38 the Indian and the epic Wolseleys of 235 Danny Rainer, 242 Korps and 266 Slippery with the former trio among the hoards who displayed top paint work for the night.

Heat one was for the smaller motors and raised 37 cars with 633 the Mourner planting 80 Woody in the fence from the word go as 301 Pete Smith buried 166 Ash Boy's rated 15/50 although the latter kept it going to nail 76 Paul Sharman's Victor as a big pile-up quickly formed by the start line. 473 Mark Nicholls pounded 384 Goldie's Corona from Wimbledon before 748 Dave Wilmot opened his account with a head-on to the luckless Sharman. 446 Lee Greer piled his smart Minx into the epic Vanguard of 182 the Ugly Git as 120 Fat Bloke met 886 Shades' Viva on the nose and Smith set about the cool A40 of Devon of the Mob's 15 Lee Collins. 364 Sean Winchester belted the Ugly Git on the nose as Wilmot fired into 263 Tarantula only to take one in turn from the recovered Ugly Git as Sharman's rough ride continued with a head-on from 118 Smiler. 286 Lingo blasted the returning 839 Pusher Paul on the nose as Wilmot evened the score on the Ugly Git with a fine pit bend follow-in. 147 Roger Cloke was punished by Shades and Nicholls as 307 Jon Joe Cunningham powered his lush looking Victor estate into Wilmot and 528 the Professor assaulted 511 Helen Licquorice's smart Manta. Head-ons from 140 Sass and the Professor left Shades' Viva snapped superbly as Sass pounded Pusher Paul. 12 Tony Spinnewijn caught Winchester behind the drivers door as he recovered with the British champ soon nailing the CAMSO man well smart Merc in revenge as Cunningham planted the tidy Maxi of 219 Rob Beavis into 207 Compo. Cloke had Cunningham out on opposite leaving the latter prone to hits from Licquorice and Nicholls as Winchester took an excellent full contact win from the back ahead of Goldie and Fat Bloke with only seven finishing.

Heat two was mainly for A60s and the action continued to come thick and fast with 32 starters and again a pile-up formed from the word go as 273 Mad Mouse buried 180 Malcolm Burbridge only to take one in turn from 41 Danny Sammat as 73 Slaphead T-boned 547 the BFA. 349 Finbarr nailed 242 Korps' rated 6/90 and buried him into Rainer trashing the latter's superb hearse as 710 Bunge took shots from 272 Mert and 508 Led Head. Burbridge piled into Mert as 267 Tufty and the BFA enjoyed a big head-on. 322 Rolly fired into Burbridge with 460 Lewis Barber then rolling the latter onto his side but the action was able to continue with Slaphead blasted Barber before 98 Daktari nailed Bunge. Finbarr weighed into the BFA as 277 Des Owen attacked Tufty and the BFA battled on to meet Led Head on the nose with 709 Stringer blasting the latter in turn. Finbarr nailed Barber as Daktari scored on the well smart Vanguard of 161 Mr Burns and Lingo hammered 156 Mickey Boy's cool MO Oxford. 261 Wiz nailed 454 Danny Thompson and Stringer and Barber enjoyed a head-on before 97 Dusty blasted Thompson only to take one in turn from Daktari who was nailed himself from Lingo. 462 Leeky then powered up the back of the latter and buried his man to boot as 51 Wusty became the next to meet the BFA on the nose. Leeky enjoyed a similar encounter with Slippery while Stringer turned round to attack Mr Burns with the latter shrugging it off to exchange a few head-ons with Mickey Boy. Wiz motored his rapid Capri to the win ahead of 396 Scott Mowlam and Rolly.

The Triumph 2000s and the other larger stuff contested the final heats with 25 for heat three which was much quieter as a result. 133 Karly buried 303 Wayne Linsdale from the off, the latter then taking one on the nose from 445 Mark Dorrill as 206 Kingy nailed 173 Rabbit and 114 Lakey pounded 397 Boo. 439 Danny Sutton powered into 336 Nigel White as 509 Les Dolan and 198 Marcus Goldsmith met on the nose. Kingy now laid into 8 Deadly Daz as Linsdale bounced back to belt 827 Nogger on the nose and White scored on Dorrill only to take one in turn from 315 Jason Ayles. A cracking finish saw 262 Pete Robertson get held up by back markers on the last lap and Sutton snatched the win with 348 Mushy pipping Robertson for second.

A slightly larger field of 28 cars for heat four with 280 Slick on opposite from the off to meet 363 Trummer's Amazon on the nose as 125 Roy Precce's Merc was pounded by 25 Tombo and 39 Peanut and 304 Dale Rainer met 209 Gary Haresign on the nose as did 456 Nathan Roberts and 323 Billy Storr. 252 Boogie hit the luckless Preece on the nose and was blasted hard by 520 the Undertaker in turn as 174 Little Rath set about 435 Dan Wilkins' P6. After completing nearly two laps against the flow Slick assaulted 204 Charlie Boy and 587 Humps but the latter had his revenge when he buried Haresign into his attacker. 179 Cool meanwhile spun 879 Wrecked Reg to take the win, 262 the Verger second and Wrecked Reg recovering for fourth. Nash ended the action by running in Penaut, albeit marginally after the reds.

29 cars came out for the first consolation which started in dramatic fashion as the Ugley Git and 264 Boonie met in a heavy head-on, although both drivers took the brunt of the impact on the drivers side. This sparked a pile-up at the end of the back straight with 168 Calvyn Girling nailing 440 Pete McVay as Led Head blasted the Ugly Git hard only to take one from 600 Lee Baker as 520 Mince T-bone the luckless Ugly Git but he was pounded by Spinnewijn in turn before the reds came out for a stray wheel. A depleted field for the restart but there was no shortage in action as 566 Andy Potter used his smart Hawk to fence Wilmot before the Professor buried Girling only to take one from Ash Boy who was nailed in turn by the similar mount of 117 Kamikaze. 207 Compo stuffed Horwood as Dusty and Humps enjoyed a head-on. The Professor nailed Kamikaze's 15/50 as Girling belted Horwood on the nose and Dusty treated Wilmot to a stiff hit. Compo buried Kamikaze setting the latter up for a T-bone from Ash Boy, the former looking for a revenge head-on but instead he leaned the leading Goldsmith into Ash Boy head-on. Kamikaze then got his intended target and pounded him with a series of T-bones before he switched his attentions to the Professor. The latter came under fire from Goldsmith who went on to take a swipe at the well smart Mk2 Triumph 2000 of 124 the Rook who duly repaid the Mendips star with a solid head-on next time round. Kamikaze enjoyed more hits with 18 Mark Schollen and Goldsmith as Potter zeroed in for a head-on to 753 Young Gun. The Rook took the from Potter and Girling with Schollen the only other finisher.

One more for the second consolation with Burbridge assaulting 568 Top Cat from the off as 825 Luke Swiderski powered the ex Brian Cope MO Oxford into Nogger and a big pile-up formed on the road bend. Mr Burns T-boned Top Cat against the flow as Lakey fenced Burbridge only to take one on the nose from Top Cat in turn. 272 Gazza blasted 346 Muttley as a recovered Burbridge attacked Nogger only to have Gazza bury him into Lakey seconds later. Kingy belted Boo on the nose before 456 Stevo fired into Nogger and Lingo hammered Gazza with a big hit. Dolan then buried Roberts' stunning Cambridge into the growing pit bend pile with the Bad Co man shrugging it off to pound Top Cat which left the shaken and brought the reds out. A very small field for the restart with 814 Mark Millen attacking the Undertaker setting the latter up for a big T-bone from Karly before Wilkins hammered the Undertaker on the nose. Roberts attacked Wilkins with the latter also taking stick from Kingy before Roberts buried Stringer into the Spedeworth star. Bunge hammered the game Wilkins only to take one later on from Roberts with the PRI man ending the action by burying Kingy, 346 Muttley took the win ahead of Bunge and Millen with only five finishing.

36 qualifiers returned for the final with Muttley taking a hit from Rolly early on as the spun Winchester took head-ons from Mushy and Ayles before Nicholls T-boned the world champion. Daktari nailed Girling as the Rook attacked Tombo and Robertson belted Daktari on the nose. 78 Mad Mace assaulted 311 Danny Smithson while Wrecked Reg treated Robertson to a T-bone before Winchester buried Sutton which also claimed 42 Paul Sammat. Rolly blasted the smart Trummy of Wrecked Reg while Wiz fenced Finbarr and Girling enjoyed a head-on with Potter before the reds came out for a shaken driver although their identity was never confirmed. Cunningham T-boned 155 Mr Nervous on the restart while 418 Ben Edwards collected a dead car and Winchester powered his Saab into the Mendips man's Volvo. The Verger followed in Potter with a three wheeled Mushy then blasting the Hawk with a cracking shot but he was destroyed in turn by Edwards. A dramatic finish saw the leading Tombo followed in on the last bend by the lurking Finbarr with Cool blasting the Spedeworth man en route to his second win with Ayles beating Mad Mace for second. Run down lap action saw Edwards blast Mushy on the nose only to take a hard shot in turn from Charlie Boy.

An incredible 60 cars came back for the final event of the night although perhaps somewhat fortunately only about half contested the Accumulator qualifier. Lingo set the ball rolling attacking Woody who then fell foul of three simply brutal hits from Dusty, Wrecked Reg and Slippery as elsewhere Lingo battered Compo with a head-on only to take one in turn from the on form Mushy who was nailed himself by Baker. Goldsmith laid into Slippery before the reds came out to check on the shaken Woody. The race resumed with Roberts blasting Charlie Boy as Fat Bloke stuffed Bunge and Winchester did the same to Stevo. Fat Bloke took a hit from Ayles as Bunge scored on 22 Dave Vincent with Ayles going on for the win ahead of Paul Sammat and Bunge. Into the DD which was a rated conclusion to the night. Beavis turned round to attack Spinnewijn with Paul Sammat also laying into the Woodlands Merc. Fuller blasted the former in turn but took one himself from Robertson who took a head-on seconds later from Rabbit. Things then exploded as Charlie Boy nailed the Indian only to take one from White in turn before he was leathered by Vincent. Gazza buried himself in the boot of the track champion but he took a crunching hit from Potter in turn. Little Rath hammering the Hawk but took one from Winchester in turn with Stringer and the Undertaker completing an epic wrecking train. On the other side of the heap Kamikaze pounded Paul Sammat with a T-bone but took one in turn from Mr Nervous in turn as Winchester blasted 95 Dave Ford only to take one from Lingo in turn. Mouse weighed into the latter's rare Riley with Bunge blasting the Gypsy Crew man as Stringer scored on Roberts and White hit Kamikaze only to take one from Pusher Paul in turn. Finbarr then blasted Horwood as 256 Bash scored on Winchester and Roberts evened the score on Stringer. Deadly set about Charlie Boy with a pair of hits as the impressive Potter pummelled Pusher Paul and Deadly allowing Roberts to also lay into the latter. Muttley connected with a T-bone Charlie Boy before Finbarr took a length of a straight run up to nail 196 Chip Howland in style. Gazza T-boned Paul Sammat while Charlie Boy nailed Potter and Finbarr weighed into Paul Sammat. Ford hit Bash and Spinnewijn with the former bouncing back to hit Mushy on the nose. Potter blasted Deadly while Howland met Pusher Paul on the nose. Spinnewijn emerged from the heap but strangely completed a lap only to pile into a load of dead cars on the other side of the pile. Howland meanwhile pounded Beavis only to take one from Gazza with the latter finishing Muttley and Roberts before meeting Howland in a final head-on which silenced both cars ending the event in a dead heat. Meanwhile entertainer awards for the night were presented to Kamikaze, Mushy, Finbarr and Winchester.

A simply stunning field of 38 Reliant Robins assembled for their final world qualifier with a massive Northern presence including several drivers from Warton and one from Buxton.

Two half car heats to begin with but an uneven split saw just 16 for the opener. 326 Shane Lynn was the first to strike spinning 536 Ryan Cunningham before the first caution period came when 398 Lea Atkins rolled into his side. 201 Dave Hodges attacked 324 Mark Latham on the restart with the latter getting his car onto two wheels a short while later before he was launched into a monster 3 ¼ roll by 553 Daniel Douglas to again bring the yellows out. The restart was also short lived as Douglas clipped 857 Dan Hill and rolled himself and with the race inside the final three laps the race was declared in favour of 85 James Ellis from 399 Darron Atkins and 285 Sean Dyer.

A much bigger 21 car field for heat two which saw plenty of rolls, many of them followed by yellow flags. 291 Stiff Haddon attacked Buxton based Jerky Boy 134 Gav Smith from the off with the former then going over and getting collected by 28 David and 29 Steve Donavan and coupled with 215 Michael Croxon doing a 1 ¼ roll the yellows came out for the first time. Two rollovers on the next attempt brought the caution flags back out as 369 Ben Atkinson and Stiff went over and it was another pair of rollovers before the next yellow flag stint as 368 Nick Bartlett fell onto his side and 93 Chris North tipped over Smith. Reliant rookie 92 Chris Gale was in the wars on the restart, recovering from a roll at the hands of 55 Sean Douglas, only to then go over again bringing the yellows out once more. The race resumed with David Donavan going over as Sean Douglas rolled Croxon only to suffer a similar fate from 19 Joe Mullarley as 69 John Cope attacked 66 Steve Willis. 552 Karl Douglas took the win ahead of 351 Tut Knowles and 66 Pork Pie.

A massive field of 36 cars assembled for heat three but it was perhaps not as action packed as expected. There were early spins for 536 Capt Crash and Atkinson before 410 Jake Calvert had Bartlett out and Croxon did a full roll. 96 Ian Robins buried a luckless Bartlett before 185 Ben Oliver rolled Knowles and Hill fenced 326 Ratty rolling the latter onto his side. 399 Darron Atkins did a ½ roll and couple with 113 tipping over 5 Terry Delacour the yellows came out for the first time. Two rolls on the restart would bring the reds out as David Donavan did a half roll and Darron Atkins a storming 2 ¼. Ellis took his second win from team mate 285 Mr Misery and 275 Phil Rowbottom.

Just shy of 30 for the final which contained an unforgettable moment for the formula. The race started with an early pit bend roll for David Donavan as Mr Misery sent Capt Crash into a tumble and 113 also went over. Rowbottom meanwhile rolled Hill leaving him hanging on the pit bend wires as Lea Atkins rolled big time on the pit bend, clearing the Armco and getting caught in the catch net fencing to bring the 3-wheelers crashing to earth on the dog track! The reds came out instantly but fortunately the driver was ok, exiting to a hear cheer on the top bend. The race resumed with Hill fencing 551 Blacknuts as 576 Colin Aldred stuffed 113 and Capt Crash rolled Calvert leaving the rapid Ellis to romp to his hat trick ahead of 143 Sam Begley and Knowles.

Heat one: 85 James Ellis, 399, 285, 143, 512, 857, 201, 185, 326, 398
Heat two: 552 Karl Douglas, 351, 66, 69, 275, 93, 96, 28, 19, 215
Heat three: Ellis, 285, 275, 66, 399, 55, 512, 576, 201, 351
Grand Final: Ellis, 143, 351, 201, 96, 552, 285, 275, 512, 55

A storming night of action. Not the heaviest pre 70 to date but a superb night of action nonetheless with an epic DD to end the night in style and some fantastic racing from the Reliants including a real unforgettable moment which will live in the memories of all those who witnessed it.
