The 7th annual Suffolk Open team championship at Mildenhall on Good Friday fielded a monster 139 car entry spread across 24 teams to the raceway with the weather on our side for once & the track in top notch condition. Visitors came from Spedeworth, Northampton, Trackstar, PRI & Braintress plus plenty up from Kent, but not much in the way of noticeable cars, just a HC Viva for RB007 Ian Laws, a Marina Coupe for MK375 Dave Carson & Mk3 Cortina's for MK396 Lee Howland & NT621 Gary Tracey. Before start time the Looney Tunes & the fully sign written Young Guns won the smartest team awards while 007 Dangerous, CN67 Mark Wittaker, CN274 Paul Coker(Lada), SC211 Barry Franklin(Capri), RM136 Mark Simpson & RM23 Dave Stafford(Capri) also picked up trophies for well turned out motors. Spare a thought though for NT20 Andy & 120 Shane Burbridge(Astra) & CN220 Andy Thacker(Capri) who would have also been in the frame had they arrived earlier.

Heat one boasted teams from groups A & B, three cars per side with 31 cars in action. The started in lively fashion for NT405 Mark Blackwell(Chevette) who was rolled by MG22 Dave Vincent(Lada) early bringing out the reds. HM101 Richard Rayner met LT89 Mick South(Belmont) on the nose as the restart commenced before TM223 Simon Royal(Lada) T-boned the Lada Estate mounted TW148 Ian Redden. South's woes continued later on as he was thundered head-on into DI12 Chris Utting(Montego) by HM163 Stuart Mackenzie. ST30 Steve Mayes(Acclaim) motored to the win from team mate ST416 Mark Smith to give them a perfect start.

Groups C & D were represented in the second heat with 35 cars out with Mk310 Tim Day(Cortina) bouncing back from an earlier attack from YG62 Trevor Buckley(Capri) to run in PR500 Wayne Dolan (Capri) as CN32 Mark Ruskin(Cortina) assaulted JS7 Chris Lowe(Acclaim) which fired him up to run in RM160 John Williams(Lada Est). RB77 Steve Davies(Cortina Est) buried the luckless Dolan as MN346 Scott Saunders(Mk2 Escort) sealed it with a hit on 7 Pigeon. WN184 Lizzy Crowden(Belmont) won it & with team mates in 4th & 9th they seized the early lead.

Teams from group A & D squared off in the next encounter & couple with the Swale Bandits out making up for missing heat one, a 38 car grid assembled for the bets heat of the bunch. MG564 Mark Cooper(Lada) started with a head-on to TW243 Robert Boswell(Cortina) & then did the same CH110 Jon Roberts(Lada). LT170 Paul Weaver in another Lada blasted SC68 Jason Day as did MG287 Paul Totham (Capri) steamed CH710 Simon Collard(Mk3 Escort Est) & MN57 Stu Cummings(Capri) assaulted RB147 Andy Davies(Mazda 323 Est). SB88 Jason Anderson(Mk2 Escort) blasted ST72 Titch Mancini(Sunny). WN112 Tracey Goodall(Mazda 323) then fired LT488 Dave Callow(Mk2 Escort) hard into a parked car as MG2 Martin Brinkworth(Lada Est) & 564 Coatie combined to bury the Lada mounted SB117 Carl Hammond. Meanwhile a massive pile up formed at the end of the home straight with 110 Jon Boy burying WN431 Nina Crouchman(Acclaim) into it only to cop one from Goodall as DI557 Paul Bowen(Lada) blasted Weaver after he had jacked BB124 Johnny Rooard(Capri). 287 Gizmo then gave Goodall a big T-bone which brought out the reds for a shaken Goodall, BB131 Barry Wade(Rover 213) winning as in the points a 3rd for the returning ST701 Kevin Cooper(Cortina) gave the Steam Team back the lead.

Another 30+ entry for the fourth heat boasting teams from groups B & D with 33 cars out, rookie 120 Burbridge & RM298 Dave Bessant(Cortina) going head to head at the start as MK384 John Golden(Lada Est) T-boned Stafford. PR312 Tom Reynolds met LZ446 Lee Greer(Lada Est) in a head-on as did YG125 Lee Overy(Capri) with HM503 Dan Hollinsworth(Capri). Bessant went on to run in SB127 Roy Shaw's Lada while the Metro of JK134 Darren Snare was shortened by a hit from LZ474 Nick Wakeling(Lada). 375 Jock buried Stafford, who was also rammed by 125 Hitler as NT81 Lee Greenwood(Capri) held off the similarly mounted CN158 Shane Davies & YG318 Terry Chapman for the honours.

The last heat for groups A & D raised 34 cars with several thrown off for being in the wrong heat. By the time we started 318 Shifty met BB388 Emmerson Fairweather(Cortina) on the nose as Dolan homed in for a T-bone on 148 Shorty & YG920 James Medley(Cortina) was run in by Willings. YG348 Sonny Sherwood(Capri) was the winner putting his team back into contention.

The final heat was open to groups B & C with 34 cars in action. The first attempt was very short lived when WN34 Julie Court(Sunny) rolled on the home straight & was collected by team mate Crouchman bringing out the reds, but thankfully Julie exited OK. Walden began the final following in RB49 Billy King(Mazda 323 Est) while 77 Davies was assaulted by a crash happy Weaver by the pit gate. Weaver took a big one from CH222 Dick Tracey(Acclaim) as 110 Jon Boy ran in 163 Spooky. Meanwhile 20 Baldy became the races second roller bringing out the reds again but not before Walden wasted 77 Davies with a follow in. King began the resumption burying LZ417 Dan Davey(Cortina) with 222 Dickey blasted King only to take one himself from HM510 Keith Rayner(Chevette). King then buried Rayner & continued with a revenge hit on the Jockstraps T-boning JS924 Stewart Wright(Astra Est), who later suffered at the hands of MN380 Trevor Wright(Mk2 Escort). The remaining qualifiers for the final were the Wonderbras, Muggers Boys, Steam Team, Young Guns & Motley Krew with defending champs Damage Inc. & the Condoms just missing out.

Before the all important final came an Accumulator for the non-qualifiers with 35 cars making it, despite the proposed 32 car limit, several more shut out & having to wait for the DD. 220 Mr T started with a hit on BB357 Neil Carter(Corrolla) as Wakeling blasted 81 Numb Nuts & MN234 Adrian Jones (Lada) put away RB352 Stu Brooks(Capri). RB18 Rob Burbridge(Cortina) then further shortened Snare's Metro with a hit while 136 Simmo pounded TW221 Michael Whitelock(Lada Est). Mayo fired back to return the favour but on Mr Bilge as LZ493 Tony Garrod(Lada Est) blasted Turbo. The rated Burbridge now targeted Anderson whose brother SB84 Marc Anderson(Lada Est) fared better with a hit on the luckless Mr Bilge who was also pounded by RM45 Fred Claydon(Capri) & batty. Turbo the treated Snare to a T-bone but fell foul to an awesome blitz from Burbridge which brought out the reds for Turbo who thankfully was able to exit OK. Aldred was declared the victor from Burbridge, 88 Anderson & 352 Mr Bilge.

32 cars returned for the all-important final with Mayes & MG19 Joe Mullarkey(Acclaim) met on the nose at the start as Titch T-boned 310 Day. Then Hurrel latched hold of Court & with the rest of the pack pushing she was thundered in on the pit bend completely destroying her machine. Jack blasted Hurrel before the reds came out to allow Court to exit her broken car. MK724 Mark Puddiphat(Samara) put paid to both Titch & WN74 Caroline Garner(Sunny Est) on the restart, the former again taking more stick, this time from Crowden. Later on Crouchman spun Shifty for third, the Young Gun responding by pulling out in front of her a lap later. She obliged with a T-bone & then buried Shifty on the top bend, but this cost both teams dear. Buckley won from WN911 Pippa Cable(Mazda 323) but with a 3rd, 6th, 8th & 9th it was Muggers Boys who raised the title from the Wonderbras. Brunso celebrated with a head-on with Goldie seconds after the reds.
T
he afternoon concluded with a DD raising no less than 57 starters for a stunning curtain call. 158 Davies met JS777 Chris Murfin(Cortina Est) head-on at the start as a monster pile up swallowed turn three. Willings buried Hollinsworth as Sparky gave 621 Tracey a T-bone. King did the same to Murfin as MN349 Lee Saunders( Mazda 323) buried Spooky only to take one from Dolan. 557 Paranoid blasted Jock as Dolan wasted Rookard with a mega length of the straight T-bone. BN192 Terry Nightingale(Sunny) blasted 50 Whitelock before 348 Mushy destroyed Hammond with a big hit. Bruno & 911 Pe Pe enjoyed a head-on as the reds appeared for an inverted Jock who was also on fire, but this didn't stop 158 Davies getting in a late blitz on JS872 Barry Overload(Cortina Est)/Numb Nuts started the restart blasting Mayo as BN21 Jason Colbert(Mk2 Escort) steamed SC115 as CN491 Neil Partridge(Cortina) blasted DI764 Stephen Spall(Lada) & 380 Shaky went in on Franklin. Sparky then gave Colbert a suicidal head-on snapping the latter's Escort big time & earning Sparky the best wrecker award. 279 Coker set about 621 Tracey & was done by Buckley who was steamed by 346 Mutley who felt the force of HM344 Chris Outhwaite(Cortina). BN521 Alan Dace(Mk2 Escort) did Hitler as Paranoid & Sparky went head to head & Outhwaite did Bruno who responded with a hit of his own on Sparky. Further hits from Hollinsworth & HM101 Richard Rayner(Cortina) finished Sparky as Hollinsworth & Outhwaite combined to pound Mr Bilge. Hitler did Vincent as a head-on with Numb Nuts saw Bruno burst into flames bringing out the reds again but not before Hitler T-boned Mr T. About half a dozen for the final restart with a head-on with Outhwaite finishing Mr T before the Horror Mob man also met 158 Davies in a stiff head-on. Numb Nuts then targeted Mushy for a large head-on in the middle of the pit bend blockage as Hitler pounded Outhwaite. Numb Nuts finished 158 Davies with a steam but missed Outhwaite & crashed into the empty Colbert car. This opened the door for Hitler to bliz him, but finished both cars & gave Outhwaite the verdict.

21 Ministox assembled on Good Friday for the second round of their track championship battle including visitors from Trackstar & PRI plus 300 Kim Hallybone making her debut & a further two drivers making their maiden outing on the shaleway.

311 Mark Couszins headed the field away in the opener as behind 419 Luke Grief was spun by rookie 406 Lee Holden while 470 Barry Vaughan did likewise to the third placed 301 Mark Amoss. 460 Carl Waterfield relieved Couszins of the lead who then slipped down the places allowing 388 Michael Williams & 341 Daniel Marston to move up. Then Williams moved up the inside of Waterfield & the two clashed resulting in 460 hitting the fence & Williams taking up the running with Marston in pursuit. Vaughan spun & was collected hard by 360 Danny Sanderson as Marston took the lead with just a lap to go & took the flag from Williams & 428 Lee Sampson.

Everyone made it back for the second heat, which was riddled with stoppages. Waterfield led them away at the first attempt but a good start by Williams saw him quickly take over with 308 Dean Hannay in pursuit until Waterfield crashed into the fence hard on top bend bringing out the reds. Couszins briefly led again on the restartas 507 Fred Pattinson spun Vaughan which also claimed Grief & 499 Gavin Payne as Williams took up the running & Couszins hit the spun Sampson handing second to 566 Steve Willis but he was also held up when he collected Grief, before the reds came out again for Hallybone who had been collected by Couszins. Another complete restart & it was Hannay's turn to lead before Vaughan took up & went on to take the spoils. Hannay held on for second & Williams claimed third.

The field was reduced to 16 for the final, Hannay again the early leader as Payne removed Willis & 496 Tommy Barnes did the same to Grief. Vaughan then crashed out was collected by Marston & Couszins which brought the reds out again for a shaken Vaughan. Hannay resumed his lead when the green flag fell & held it for most of the race until a slow puncture started to slow him down. 4th placed Sanderson retired while looking strong as Marston took up the lead in the closing stages & went on to seal his double, Hannay holding on for third when Payne nipped past on the final lap
